Oil Change Frequency

So, the local GMC dealership went Ch.11 about 2 or so months ago. Today, I went to the local Chevy dealership for an oil change. My question is regarding the frequency. The GMC dealership always put 5K miles on the sticker; however, the Chevy dealership put 3K miles. Should I stick the the 5K schedule as I have since the beginning (truck has 33,6xx miles on it)?

 

While I was waiting, I glanced around the lot looking at 09 Chevys. So, this salesman walks up and does his normal pitch, blah, blah, blah...and I told him was only looking, just killing time while I wait. Anyway, when I mentioned that I owned a GMC, he stated that within a month or so, their dealership was going to be carrying GMC products as well :thumbs: Does that sound right? Can you imagine having Sierras and Silverados (not to mention all the other models) parked side by side on the lot for sale. Wonder if this would help, hurt sales?

 

Has anyone else seen this?

If you're using dino oil, I would try to change it every 3000 miles.

 

As far as the Chevy and GMC on the same lot, there is a few dealerships around here like that. It's kind of nice as far as being able to look at both trucks w/o having to driving around.

Dealership where i just bought mine has done that. Patterson GMC and Collins Chevrolet.... It's now called (Patterson/Collins GM)

At our dealership although it says GM on the Sign we sell, GM, Chev, Pontiac, and Buick. All parked side by side no descrimination to any.

 

Oh and it's recomended 3000 miles / 5000 Kilometers for oil changes or just go by the OLM.

 

I run Mobile 1 synthetic and just go by the OLM.

I am certainly not the Dealership police, however we have many good contributing members on this forum who feed their families working at GM Dealerships. I cannot speak for them but if I worked at one, the slang being used for my place of employment would not sit well with me.

 

I am sure there are some bad eggs out there, but there are many good ones as well.

Back home in Ohio there are Chevy dealerships everywhere but you have to drive 35 min to a GMC dealership. I would like to see a couple of them start to carry both of them. I have never really looked at GMC's bc there is no dealerships around me.

Just go by the computer. But check the level regularly.

 

The whole 3000 mile oil change was put in place when leaded gas was used. That's also why spark plugs don't need to be changed until 100,000 miles now. Oil change places and dealerships will tend to tell you 3000 miles because it gets you back in for another oil change sooner, which means more money for them. I use to run my old '95 Grand Prix for 5000+ miles, which was mostly highway, on dino oil. Heavy use such as towing will need more frequent attention. I usually get 7000 miles out of my Silvy before I need a change.

Both brands at one dealer is not a new thing at all.

 

The local GMC dealer closed up last month and the Chevy dealer took over the GMC, Pontiac and Buick brands. So the Chevey dealer (which had only Chevy and Cadillac) now has all GM products under one roof.

We have several Chevy/GMC dealerships in this area.

 

5000 miles is a perfectly fine interval for changing your oil. The 3000 mile oil change myth was nothing more than a snow job created by the oil change franchise industry to make more money. That's why even your GM manual says up to 7500 miles in it now.

 

Many people still fall for it and most every oil change place will make damn sure to place a 3000 mile reminder sticker on your windshield. It is total bullshit.

I remember when I bought my first new truck. I was bouncing between GMC and Chevy as it really came down to what trim I wanted. When I mentioned that to the Chevy dealer, he said I would be better off with Chevy because they have tons more dealers and if I wanted my truck fixed I would have to take to a GMC shop.

 

My apologies to C&A's Dad but over many years and many dealerships, like transmission shops, I have lost faith in them to put my interests even in their top 10 list.

I have to chuckle when I see so many posts on an automotive forum referring to the local dealer as the "stealer" then see loads of posts on the same forum advising owners to re-flash the ECU to remove a performance tune before going in for service. Seems to this ol' country boy that the guys on the lot aren't the only stealers. Just my $0.02. And by the way, a couple of my local DEALERS sell both GM and Chevy trucks. While I'm on my soap box, 3k mile oil changes are absolutely unnecessary unless you're operating in extreme conditions.

Point taken. When I was looking recently I ran into 2 out of 5 dealers that were the pushy annoying type.

The others were very nice to deal with I have to say. I even contacted them after I found my truck and let them know to take me off their list.

 

Much better than I recall from my one and only experience from car buying from a dealer ten years ago. He was pushy and intimidating, I was young and dumb :D and he knew it. I leased a fairly stripped Silverado, I don't even want to know how badly I got hosed on that deal (shopped based on lease payments) I would LOVE to run into this clown again, but he is probably no longer a salesman since the dealership closed years ago.

 

I just recalled a funny story though: Back in December when I was looking at Titan's I went to a independant used car lot to drive one. While in the owners office I asked some questions, one of which was about MPG's. He said "I will call Bob, he has been driving it for a while". He calls Bob and Bob says "ehh about 15-16MPG's". Slippery Pete hangs up the phone and tells me, "17". Pete didn't know my buddy and I could here Bob clear as a bell on the phone. We looked at each other and left :thumbs:

    • This doesn't look like a GM truck. Not needed on a HD truck
    • It varies a ton around me. Some places are still at $5.00 or higher and others are way down into the $4's.   Offroad diesel was $4.02 at the one station I passed today.

    • The not as clean as one would assume theme with the new engine oil, that reminds me of comments over the years with mechanics not always being so on board with filling an oil filter, not from the center anyway due to that typically being the clean side of the filter, danger of some contaminant falling into the filter if not careful but the realization now that the oil may not be as pure as one had assumed it would surely be. Yes it would be possible to fill from the small holes but that means messing with something to prop open the anti drain back valve if the filter is so equipped and not damage that valve in the process. Me, I have hardly ever prefilled an engine oil filter however I have prefilled diesel fuel filters with a filter on a fuel bulk tank and for anyone that has messed with diesel engines with filters and units that have a limited or no way of priming them, putting on a dry filter is a bad day to say the least with those crappy systems. But anyway back to not so clean engine oil, indeed perhaps its not so bad after all that I have not made a practice of prefilling oil filters.    As Grumpy Bear commented on keeping things clean, that I really have to wonder what the typical practice is at a dealer or any other shop that changes engine oil, do they make sure to wipe or wash off the oil plug and certainly if it fell into some gunk or onto a dirty floor, or that they wiped the filter mounting flange and didn't go and use some dirty rag and end up adding dirt to the inside of the head of the filter mount. Or be careless in how they stored or handled the new filter and if they were bumping into items under the vehicle with the filter opening facing up and having dirt drop right into the filter and if so right into the threaded center that is on the clean side. The top side, did they clean away the built up gunk that may be around the filler before removing the cap or to be really careful at that point that something right close to the filler hole that was hidden under the caps flange won't fall into the engine. Or did they clean the funnel or was that just laying there covered in oil from the oil change before and dust kicked up from sweeping the floor stuck to the oil and now that will go running into the next persons engine due to just not cleaning the funnel as "they won't know anyway" attitude as that young guy is more worried about taking a break so he can go outside and smoke a joint. Just random points that came to mind when I think about what some hired personnel may do that the shop foreman has no idea of or perhaps the whole attitude of some shops may be "eh ... who cares, they will never know the difference anyway".
