Parking Brake...revisited

So my inspection expired back in December (just noticed it last week though), so I've been trying to find someone that will pass it without a working parking brake. No luck. At least not in Tyler.

I know there are a ton of threads on this (already searched), but none of the pictures are still up. So, has anyone fixed a parking brake on a 1999-2002 1/2 with disc brakes? Does anyone have any pics of what to look for? It would cost $75-250 to fix it, and I don't have $25 to spend on it right now. So, if I can fix it, that would be awesome.

Any hints on what to look for? The pedal goes all the way to the floor, the cables all move, so its something in the brake itself. The guy said it is probably the clip, and if not that then it is the pads.

Thanks in advance :rollin: (but only if ya help).

I think the E brake shoes are toast. They are in the hat in the rotor as some sort of quasi-engineered drum in a disc setup. Maybe somebody here has a diagram???

take that drum off, and see what the pads look like. if they are toast, its going to cost 100$ (in canada) for new ones... i just replaced my rear rotors and pads, but i passed on buying new parking break shoes as i NEVER use it, and they are so expensive.

I was able to get new parking brake shoes for about 70 bucks. It's easier than you think (don't be too worried about it). Just take the rotor off (mine came right off easily), I turned the little sprocket thing (where the wheel "cylinder" would be if the parking brake was a real hydraulic drum brake) until it loosened the shoe enough to kind of wiggle it off the assembly. I put the new parking brake shoes on and adjusted it so I could just barely get the rotor back on without it rubbing. Man, the thing holds the truck great now, and the pedal only goes halfway to the floor (though apparently it's supposed to go all the way). Just dig into it.

Cool. Probably have to wait until this summer to tear it apart, but at least it sounds doable. I did read in an earlier thread that you needed a GM tool for it. Still true?

I bought the shoes. Cost me about 80.00. When I got everthing apart(THOSE BOLTS WERE A BITCH)I found that my e-brake shoes had ruined the inside of the drum. I just put it back togther that was 3 yrs ago. I guess i,ll eventially buy new rotors and fix it. They never check mine here in Sherman, TX.s
