So I will be home in a few months and so far this deployment the wife and I have bought the house, all the funiture and stupid shit she said we need for the house, and now looking at dogs. What is the best medium size hunting dog that would also be good with kids and not tear up the house and funiture? Thanks guys!

What are you hunting and what type of terrain?

 

Almost all of the hunting breeds CAN BE great dogs, it all depends on you/your trainer. I have never seen a dog, that given the proper training you had to worry about the house and furniture. People like to blame those actions on the breed or dog, but what it really boils down to is if we put in the time for proper training, you rarely have to worry about it.

So true. I got my daughter a Catahoula/Blue Heeler mix, and it is the best dog for my lil girl. The damn dog challenged a Rot that came in between it and my daughter. Protective, but not aggressive. I sure miss that damn dog.

 

EDIT: I am surprised at how many ppl have never heard of the Catahoula breed. It is a beautiful dog, and I love the yodel howl that it has

mostly hunt fesents in a grassy brushy area... I only go hunting for fesents a few times a year so it would mostly be a house dog except for the few times a year.

Can it hunt birds? We use Blue heeler's and such for hunting cougars, but they suck for birds.

 

Depends on the type of hunting

 

For waterfowl and some upland;

For me it is a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Loyal, friendly and hard working. The only problem with them is they can be very stuborn and hard headed. But that usually comes out in the training. train them too hard and they becone stuborn.

The other one for me is the good old lab, cannot go wrong with them. If you want medium size 50-60 lbs, look for an english lab as we in NA like to bred our labs big. Our english lab is 60 lbs and just the right size for handling. Our chessie is 90lbs and although she is an amazing dog, she is a little on the big size.

Well you can't beat a lab for kid dogs and they make good pheasant dogs. I'm not a huge fan of flush dogs though, but if its only for a few hunts a year I could live with that. They do have some pointing labs out there. I don't have much experience with them though.

 

I like Brittany's for pheasant. They don't tend to run as big as most of your pointers and they tend to be less hyper (as far as hunting breeds go). Most are really good with the family too.

 

But just for good all around dogs, good with kids, people and typically other dogs, and have lots of energy...can't go wrong with a lab.

I have a beagle and an English pointer. The Beagle is good for hunting rabbits and coons and squirrels, but not birds. The English pointer I hear is good for bird hunting, including duck hunting, but I've never taken him. The beagle is GREAT with the kids, doesn't tear up the house and isn't too big for an inside dog. The English pointer is good with kids too, but he tears up the house, not to mention he's too large to stay inside the house. He would sometimes even get up onto the kitchen counter to grab food. So he stays outside permanantly (unless it gets below freezing, which isn't very often here). Both dogs love to dig holes in the yard, which aggravates me. And both get very aggresive when other dogs come around, but only the English pointer gets very aggresive when a stranger comes around. He starts barking and growling like he's a dam pitbull or something, which is kinda good I guess since he stays outside and can watch the house and yard for me. He woke me up one arond 2am one night he was growling so much, and there was a "suspicous" lookin guy walkin off up the street. I wonder if he was snooping around my yard and the dog ran him off.

Not a breed out there that is more loyal or smart. Of course there are others but mine used to even go fishing and loved riding in the boat. He's gone now but what a great dog! I'll never forget him

I should also add, that we did our homework on the best house dog for kids. My wife wanted a Jack Russel terrier, but we found that they are EXTREMELY hyper little dogs that shouldn't be left alone in a house. The beagle seemed the best option as it was about the size we wanted, and was rated by tons of pet websites and such as being a GREAT dog for kids. We bought him about 4 years agowhen he was only 3 or 4 weeks old. The English pointer, we just got him about 2 years ago, because we wanted a larger dog to "protect" the house, but we ended up having to leave him outside. We got him from the animal shelter, no telling what kind of home he came from, although we wer told he belonged to an older couple who could no longer care for him.
