4 Wheel Hi In Reverse ?

Hey all. Quick question. I had had my truck in 4 wheel hi yesterday. I noticed the when I back up and cut the wheel the front diff. acts like a locker. It only does it in reverse. If I back up and cut the wheel to the right the right front tire will accutually completely lock up and slide then will let go when give it more quite a bit more gas. I've never noticed this before. Just curious if its normal or if I need to take it to the dealer for service. It was the 1st time I used the 4WD since I got the truck back from the body shop back in February. Could this be accident related? The truck was in 4WD at the time of the accident and was spun around about 135 degrees. Thank for the help.

its probably binding up ......
:)

I can't see how it would act like a locker. I can see it binding up, however, as it should be attempting to go farther than the rear wheels, and hence the front wheels would both have to slip (or the rears). Put it on grass/dirt/something slippery and see if both ends pull, without undue noise. If so, I would say its fine.

If I drive forward it's fine and if I back up straight its fine. but when I go to turn in reverse, as if I were backing out of the driveway it binds up. I was under the truck today to grease front end and looked at the axles The CV boots are show no signs of craking or tearing. The truck acts 100% normal in 2WD. Thats what makes me think it is a differential issue.

so does mine. i had to kick 4hi in to get on ramps a week ago, and forgot to disengage it. was backing up from garage and taking slight turn to maneuver out - and it halted itself.

you are not supposed to drive on dry pavement in 4x4 mode. on wet or mud or snow or ice, wheels will slip. not on dry. you'll screw your transfer case and front diff.

Its not designed to be driven in 4wd on dry pavement much less with the wheels turned, if you go forward and cut it to full lock it will bind up and stop too, its doing what its ment to....you arent. All you are doing is binding up your drivetrain, dealers will put on in 4wd and cut it full lock to listen for popping to determine damage to the 4WD before they trade for one. now if it pops, take it to the dealer while you still have a warranty.

Let me clarify. I was not on on dry pavment. I was on dirt coming of a trail into a dirt parking area. When I went to back in next to another truck the front end bound and dragged the tire.

It was doing what it is supposed to do. Even "Dry" dirt is considered a hard surface, only use 4x4 when on a slippery surface like mud, snow, sand, and things like that where there is not much traction.

Its ok, just try to avoid doing that again. Any traction while turning in 4wd will bind up. The outside wheel in the turn has to turn more then the inside causing the binding.
