My Exhaust Fell Off!

so a few years ago i got a custom exhaust installed. well, its now been uninstalled...

i came out of pep boys yesterday after work because i wanted to buy some of that techron fuel system cleaner and i see that my driver side exhaust pipe is maybe an inch of the ground. so im like wtf, i look underneath and see that the weld holding the pipe to the muffler is half rotted away. the bracket furthest towards the back has also been broken for awhile, but all has been good until now. part of me thinks it got banged somehow while it was at the dealership (i got it back earlier that afternoon).

so anyway, seeing the pipe hanging there i think, ok, ive got a bungee cord in back ill just bungee it until i get home. well, i get under the truck (in full dress pants, shoes, and shirt since, you know, i was on my way home from work) and start to lift the pipe up (and now i see just how bad the rot was, holy crap) and as i lift up i hear a bang and the other end falls- i snapped the weld on the muffler. so now all thats holding it up is a single hanger near the muffler. its actually kinda weird where it rotted- the pipe behind the tires, which would get sprayed consistently, was fine. directly under the truck was the problem. i figured the rear would get hit hardest but apparently not.

so now i cant drive home like this, so of course i rip it all out and pull it off. so now im driving around with my exhaust pipe sitting in the bed and effectively have 1.5 exhaust. although its really not all bad- it sounds awesome!!!!! and ive actually gained mpg (if you could only see the bends that were in this thing). all my exhaust now flows directly out of the 3" outlet, even though the other pipe is still attached. my only concern was that it was dumping too close to the axle (because of the heat and cables and whatnot) but thats not an issue. here are two pics:

Either cut the other one off, or if you have it redone, see if they can clamp it together. If they mig weld it, that will be where you notice a rust problem. I don't know if oxy-acet, would rust, since I don't do oxy.acet.

Been there done that, lol. Several years ago I had an Ford Exploder (I know...) and I had a Flowmaster turned down on it and fell off driving down a busy street so I immediately pulled over and my first reaction was to hurry up and throw it in the truck. Well, grabbing it was a bad idea and I burned several of my finger tips before I ended up getting it with a pair of gloves. By that time I had spent several minutes (Which felt like an eternity) blocking traffic. It sucked.

I remember all my friends hangers would rot off in a year. Another reason to not do an annoying exhaust change.

Trick to stainless system is to paint the welds. Unless the shop uses something that does not rust as the filler rod. And just because it says stainless does not mean it will not rust.
