Took a look through the generator room at my work and checked out the set up and as I looked closer to the engine i realized its a GM 8.1

I thought it was pretty cool so here are some pics.

Yes, that would be a GM Industrial Engine....... I have seen all sorts of GM engines in generators........ 4 and 6 cylinder engines... The share a lot of stuff with passenger vehicle engines... But will have odd pieces that ARE NO WHERE near the passenger engine.

Look closely, 4.3L are in fork lifts.... Just as happy as can be running on LP. In my town I can name about 3 industrial plants that have fork lifts with 4.3L vortec on LP (most of which have gone into the basement machine shop inside my NAPA store)..... And one that has them with VW 1.9 tdi's (wow what idiot put that in a fork lift geeeees).

To the GM parts hands on here if I call with a part number DON'T ask me what it fits UNLESS YOU REALLY want to know.... I shale shocked the last GM hand that asked me..... What it was just a Hyster Fork Lift.

Those little VW turbo diesels are really good engines, they'll last a lifetime. They'll probably outlast a 4.3l v6. Although the 4.3l isn't a bad engine either, the VW tdi is a better choice for a forklift.

I`ve worked on some of those that have turbos too. there are tons of 305/350/496 gensets all over. kohler likes to package them in natural gas aplications. (as is this unit.)

HAHAHA, we work the 1.9 VW heads at least one a month (of forklifts I dunnno about cars, but it is the same problem)...... Timing belt snaps..... Bends every valve.... They are quite the money makers.. The 4.3L, will be wore SLAM out......

I used to work at Cummins OER when they were still in Canada, doing nothing but assembling VW cyl heads, the TDI we were getting as cores rarely had under 400k on them. But like any engine, they require maintanence, and the timing belt is one of the easiest things to change, yet it gets overlooked.

Yeah, timing belts will snap but they're supposed to be replaced after so many hours of use. And, obviously someone didn't. Those diesels will still outlast the 4.3l engines. The same with all diesels, they outlast gas engines.

What was Cummins using the VW TDI's for?
