I live in va and I sold a atv today. I made a very stupid mistake. The guy that contacted me said he would buy the two atvs. We met at bass pro and he decided he didnt want one. His buddy came and he bought the other atv. Here inlies my problem.

1. I didnt make a bill of sale, usualy do but it sliped my mind.

2. When signing the title he asked me not to put the amount, not a big deal at the time

3. I gave him the title and he didnt sign it, stateing that he wasnt going to register it

4. he asked for my address on the title, i didnt give it.

I called his buddy back and asked him to have him meet me back there and do a bill of sale. I got back to bass pro and called his friend back and he said his buddy didnt need a bill of sale so I asked for his buddys number. he gave me a number but it didnt work. I went to call him back and no answer. Idk what they could be trying to do. I talked to a cop and he stated that no thing illeagle has happend and theres nothing to report.

Someone help idk what to do.

As long as you got cash there are no worries. If you took a check and it doesn't clear, problem.

I have bought and sold many many atv's

I always write up a bill of sale and have both partys sign and date

He didnt want to put a price so when he decides to register it he wont have to pay taxes on the full amount.

If you got your money, i wouldnt sweat it, i dont see a problem in the future.

You didnt do anything wrong

At least in Ohio for regular vehicles, the title must be signed by both parties in the presence of a notary. I don't deal enough with atv's or recreational vehicles to know all the particulars there.

Take the money and run.....just kidding. Your part sounds all legit.

You should be able to fill out a form that the State has saying that you sold the item and that the item is no longer registered to you. You should have all the information to put on the form since you registered the vehicle when required and renewed the the registration as required. I'm sure the guy is trying to save taxes and registration fees. I see you have no worries, unless your state has a requirement that any title changes be notarized or be done in the DMV office.

In Texas, private parties can transfer a vehicle title simply by the owner signing it over. It's the buyers responsibility to register it properly and in a timely manner. Now, there is a form that can be filled out online stating that the owner did sign away the title and it should no longer be considered registered in his name. It is then placed on file and should anything arise if the vehicle remains unregistered by the "buyer" the seller has covered his ass.

I can only tell you what happened to someone I know who sold a snowmobile under similar circumstances. The new owner never transfer ownership and the seller did not really thing is was important. Then about 4 months later he gets a call from police in a town some 500 miles away. They found the snowmobile damaged and abandoned and traced it to him. He was the only owner of record and he could not prove he sold it or to whom. The police could not locate who riding it at the time and if any injuries occurred. He explained to the police that he sold it some 4 months prior. He said it took some convincing to them he was not the driver who wrecked it but they eventually figured it was impossible for him have returned some 500 miles back home it the time lapsed since the accident. He asked what would happen to it if no one claimed it and they told him it was impounded and would be sold off at auction in no one claimed it. He contemplated claiming as he was the owner of record. He contacted a lawyer whom advised against it as he could be held liable for any costs associated with the accident, property damage, recovery and storage fee's etc.
