I'm talking about your TomToms, Garmins, etc. that suction cup to the windshield. I usually have mine just on the left side of the rearview mirror or on the upper left of the windshield. What about you guys?

Pleeeeeeeeeease take them off and hide them when you park. Every week I read about windows being broken and GPS units being stolen. Of course that's in addition to the reports we have to take at work.

You forgot "I know where the hell I am and do not need one" in the poll. :smash:

Seriously, I have never had a need for a GPS except when out on the gulf fishing. Even then, I DO know how to read a compass, and do not trust my life to an electronic device.

Have you read the articles lately about GPS's getting people lost on some desolate road? Or truckers hitting underpasses the GPS routed them through?

Most folks I know that have them do not even know how to use them, just have them up there for the "cool" factor.

You can have 'em.

I have those 2 cubby holes on either side of the HVAC controls. My Garmin came with a smooth plastic disc with double sided tape on one side, I stuck that to the inside of the hole and suction cupped the mount to that. Works good. Sometimes it likes to fall off, but I just take it off every couple of months and put it back on and I don't have that issue. Works pretty good.

I know it's not up on the windshield where I can look at it instantly, but it is a good spot and I have never had any issues with it being where it is.

The only real screw up of my GPS is one time in Vegas it kept trying to send me the wrong way down a 1 way street. It's never led me down some desolate road or anything. I have to drive all over California, and sometimes I fly out to other states and drive all over, so it is a real advantage. In Seattle, it was a PITA even with a GPS, every intersection is a 6 way intersection.

I keep my GPS folded, behind the passenger front seat and when in use in the navigators (wife) lap below the windshield.

GPS - expensive , Folding Maps - Priceless (usually free from the state DOT). :smash:

I have a GPS function in my phone and have tried using it, do not like the short notice of a direction change and the time lag.

I like to preplan my trips when going to a place that is new to me ( the big picture and I will get a local map for the details).

... not on the windshield at all...

... I mount my TomTomGo630 on the lower part of the dash, left of the ashtray ('97 Chev), came with a plastic disk that I stuck to the vinyl with KrazyGlue (original sticky tape would not stay in place), then suction cup the TomTom mounting bracket.

... I can see it very easily when driving by glancing downward for a second, and I can reach it easily when required (it has Bluetooth to operate my phone handsfree)

... also less visible to someone walking down the street or through a parking lot

... heard of one guy locally that had his truck broken into.. someone stole his GPS and garage door opener... then pressed HOME on the GPS to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, and by the time the guy got home, the thieves had 'helped themselves' to his tools and stuff that were in the garage.

... I don't have HOME programmed to my house address..... LOL

For my garmen that I use in the car, I use a 'bean-bag' mount that sits ontop of the dashboard, like this:

http://gpsmagazine.com/2007/08/dont_like_t...hield_mount.php

When not in use, the gps is put in the glove-box out of site, and the bean-bag mount placed on the floor, out of immediate site.

No small circles left on the windshield to let people know you have a gps.

For the truck, that's easier...it's in the dash. ;)

I don't think he asked that. :smash:

I put mine right in the upper left hand corner of the windshield. Easy to reach to make adjustments. I run my power cord over my steering column and tuck it under my instrument cluster, and then pinch the wire between my dash and the plastic on my A-pillar.

I cut out a piece of wood to fit in the cubby hole, then mounted a RAM mount for my Garmin GPS to the wood. Wood is a tight fit with velcro at the rear of the hole to secure it and is painted black. I had a similar set up in my 2002. Hole for for the 2009 is different, so I had to start over. Bluetooth ear piece sits in the little cubby.

Bob, brilliant minds think alike. I made a mount with am old shelf bracket and a piece of wood to slip in one of the useless cubbies. I use the mount to hold my wireless backup cam screen(cam is on rear of camper), and it also holds my trailer TPMS head.

This idea may not work with a GPS, it may not get signals if not in the winshield.

Easy to remove when not pulling the camper or boat.
