2008 Sierra Denali

Has anyone had problems with their black Denali's paint. I baby this thing and wax it frequently, but I am getting so many rock chips it is unbeliveable. I even have them on the tailgate! Any kind of slight scratch seems to be more noticable than it should. I only have 20,000 miles on it, never leave it outside and baby it. Any feedback would be appreciated

Thanks

Quality factory paint jobs are just things of the past. The only cure here is custom shop repaint.

The only thing you can do to minimize the damage is to use nonabrasive wax, install good splash guards to keep gravel from being thrown on the painted surfaces, and also install a good bug deflector.

I know it sucks to get a Yugo quality paint job on a $ 50k truck, but that's how it is.

Is this your first black vehicle? It's very common on a black vehicle to have defects jump out at you visually much more than any other color.

I highly doubt you just have "bad paint" -- the paint on these trucks is better than most, honestly. Light scuffs and scrapes you can usually either take care of with a "cleaner wax" or a product like Meguiar's Scratch-X by hand; deeper defects usually require machine polishing (which is usually best left to a professional unless you want to invest a bit of time, money, and energy into getting equipment and learning yourself).

I installed GM stone guards when I bought it - there are chips directly behind the stone guards! The area infront of the rear wheel that has the plastic covering shows chips all around and above it. This truck looks like it was peppered by a shot gun! I have a appointment with a GM rep this week for him to look at it. It will be interesting to see what he says

Do you live on or travel on dirt or gravel roads often? I understand you have issues with paint chips, but you didn't address my questions so I really can't assess what you're really dealing with here.

I should note that I am a professional detailer and also do paint work, I've seen lots and lots of paint on lots of different vehicles over the years and as I said, for what's coming out of an auto factory today the paint on these GM trucks is really not that bad in the grand scheme of things.

Yes, it sucks. I've had my truck painted twice by GM now... They will issue a free paint job for those who are having issues, but it's suppose to be a 1 time thing.

I have an 08 SD, and that black paint is stupid thin. My tail gate is peppered with white spots where stones chipped it, and lots of scratches on the sides as well. This truck only has 12k miles on it!

My '00 had a lot better paint. But like it was said above, great paint is a thing of the past.

I have a 2007 that according to the GM paint center I took it to, said it was the WORST paint job they'd ever seen. Clear coat was VERY thin. (You could see the primer and paint specks thru the paint on a bright sunny day) Impossible to buff and very easy to scratch and chip.

GM did a complete strip and repaint and did an outstanding job. I was also told by the regional manager that almost all the Denali's had bad paint.

I know what a good quality paint job looks like. I have a 1984 Mercedes 500SEL , and a 1985 Mercedes 300DT with original factory shiny paint. The color is ivory on both. No rust on either. No clearcoat peeling either.

All I have to say is: You cannot polish a turd.

Yes you can. It's called a shiny turd.
