Strange Noise From Under The Truck

Recommended Posts

Greetings all, I have an issue that seems to have developed this last week. Well, I noticed it Saturday. It seems to happen when driving uphill only and at slower speeds. I'll say 10-30MPH maybe? It seems to be coming from the middle or possibly rear of the truck. It sounds like something some ware spinning is hitting periodically as its going around. Does that make sense? The type of sound reminds me of tree branches rubbing on a galvanized steel roof. Tonight I jacked up the truck and spent 10-15 minutes under it. It appears that the factory u joints are still tight. The u bolts for the rear end are tight. The exhaust is secure. I checked the lug nuts.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be?

Swing bearing on its last leg......... You know the one right be for the wrench drops into the clock works.....

See if you have movement at the bearing... Left, Right, Up, Down.... But that sounds normal for a dying swing bearing

Oooooohh Gotcha. Ya I have a center support bearing on my 70. Ya, this is a 00 x-cab. The truck has a huge one piece drive shaft. I'm not sure if that applies to an x-cab Long bed??? Good idea though.

I actually liked it, but I got old eyes and bold text is where it's at for us!

More commonly known as a carrier bearing, sounds like it's time to replace it. The newer u-joints are tight right up until they break, better get them all replaced at the same time.

FWIW, we always called it a "hanger bearing"...cause the drive shaft hung from it. Anyways, I don't think they are used modern light trucks anymore so you're still looking for the noise, right?

Maybe something loose inside the brake drums, like a broken spring?

They are still used in light trucks especially in trucks with extended cabs, crew cabs or 8ft beds. Proper number is HB88107-A or -E. Biggest deal do you have 3 U-joints or 2 on the shaft going to the rear diff? If you have 3 your truck has it. 2 and It does not. 4wd's don't most of the time, since the drive shaft is shortened already. I have not gone to work yet so, I can not look the truck up in the illustrated guide to see the step up on the 06's.

Swing Bearing, hanger bearing, drive line bearing, Drive Shaft Bearing, aka noise maker in the drive line the majority of time on trucks.

It must be because it has 4wd. Yes, only 2 u joints, and a one piece rear drive shaft. The truck has 4 wheel disk and I checked the hardware for rattles or broken pieces.

Today I had to come home then leave to go up into the mountains and back home. So that gave me 2 oppertunities to come up my steep road. Both times the sound is gone. However! On my 35 (each way) mile trip up for dinner a vibration has developed. I have had bad Ujoints before. These feel real tight with no wobble or backlash from worn needle bearings. But like I said they are original with 140,000 mostly towing miles. I am really stumped. But I do have AAA if somthing goes!

At the very least I like bold. I have a hard time reading non bold script. And I am young with "good" eyes.

In my experience, you can't always tell a joint is bad by jerking around on it. I had a F-150 with a bad rear u-joint and I couldn't move the thing at all, but new joint cured the bad vibes. 140,000 is right up there for a worn out one...
