Gm Should Build A True Off Road Package

I have been very happy with the quality and durability of my GM trucks but it would be great if GM would build something to compete with the Ford SVT Raptor or Ram PowerWagon as far as OffRoad Ability. The Raptor comes with 35's and a real rear locker and the PowerWagon comes with real front and rear lockers and a winch.

The Z71 pales in comparison (I own 4) and can certianly be modded with aftermarket parts (two of my trucks are lifted), but it would be great if GM would offer a true Off-Road package with larger wheelwell openingsand factory 35's and a stronger front drive axle and of course a real locker at least in the back, and wouldn't a selectable front locker be cool. How about real bumpers and a winch option.

GM make a great truck but lately I have had visions of Raptors and PowerWagons dancing in my head.

I definitely agree. Unfortunately I don't think GM is in a position right now to focus on "niche" models. They're all about volume sales at this point in time. IMO they should offer a 1500 model with the stance of the 2500's and aggressive AT tires with some lockers like you suggested.

There is a concept truck called ZR-2. From diesel station.com:

Chevrolet has taken the wraps off their new Silverado ZR2 concept at SEMA. The new Silverado ZR2 concept features a widened body, tall stance and powerful LS supercharged engine and GM says it’s ready to “hit the berms, dry washes and gullies of the Baja Peninsula.”

Meant to showcase GM's extensive performance parts collection, the ZR2 has been outfitted with a 550 horsepower LS supercharged V8 crate engine. Other goodies include BDS shocks, a four-inch lift kit, an extruded aluminum cargo management rail system (in the bed), and skid plates.

In terms of styling, the ZR2 features a bold design with carbon fiber body work (the front fenders, hood, fender flares, side sills and tailgate), a larger grille, and 20-inch BBS RD wheels with 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler off-road tires. On the exterior the concept is painted in Dune Metallic. Inside, the concept boasts black leather and suede seats (with contrast stitching) and plenty of carbon fiber trim.

I understand your point but when talking to the Ford and Ram (The brand formally known as Dodge) dealers they tell me that every Raptor or PowerWagon they get sells very quickly and there is always people looking looking for them.

I would like to see something in line with what they did to the S10 line years ago by adding the ZR2, and the Xtream. This would move into both markets in a full size truck. If I could I would get one of each!

I really like the ZR2 SEMA concept, but that's overkill IMO. Same with the Raptor. Powerwagon is more along the lines of what everyday Joe truck buyer is looking for. Most ppl don't want to spend $45-$50K for an Offroad truck that they only want in the first place because of the more aggressive stance and to do light offroading such as going to Hunting Camps, and Muddy construction sites etc. A good compromise would be a Higher Stance 1500 with 33's, maybe fender flares etc. that has some increased capability via lockers and maybe gearing with a minimum price increase of $2-4K over regular Z71's. This would sell like hot cakes.

i agree i'd like to see a truck that can go offroad and take some hits and be fine, for a good price... and one that dosen't lose any ability to be a truck..like the raptor

At this point in time, GM does not need a poser truck that looks as if it was attacked by a JC Whitney catalog or the import isle of Advanced Auto.

GM needs to get their core vehicles in check before they go out and make some silly truck that can go over some piles of sand.

Fully agreed. The Ford Raptor and Dodge Power Wagon are both niche market trucks and most probably aren't profitable. The last thing GM needs to do right now is produce anything that doesn't have the realistic potential to be profitable in a short period of time.

Want an off-roader to compete with the other niche trucks? Build it yourself.

I agree about the Raptor, but I think the Power Wagon is something a little different than just a niche truck.
