Your gas gauge should also drop if you put it in neutral while driving. The RPMs are an emissions thing, they must be above or at 1000 if vehicle speeds are more than 15 to 20 mph. Your truck is doing exactly what it should do.

The pump runs off of the torque converter, it has to pump when the converter is turning.

A little yelling never hurts. You don't have as much control over the vehicle while in neutral.

 

Besides you can do stupid stuff. Once I was going to put my truck in neutral going 50 and shoved into reverse. That was exciting.
