I just did an oil change on my truck recently and before my next one comes up i'd like an answer on wether i want syn or dino blood in my truck..

i'm still trying to figure out if it's a 305 or 350.. i should know by this weekend lmao x.x it's a rebuilt engine is all i know and i've been told by nurmerous ppl it's a 305 or a 350.. which i already knew.. but no definate answer.. i'm taking it to a friend this weekend to figure this out as well as do some plugs and wires

but enough of that...

i've read alot of stuff on Syn and Dino but i'm just looking for opinions here

i'm thinking of doing the entire truck in synthetic

Just go with synthetic. It's an all-around better option and has helped make my truck more efficiently than it was when I bought it used. The price difference isn't much, so why not go with the best? Take care of your truck, and it will take care of you.

By the way, I'm not sure if Advance Auto is still running this special, but they had a great deal on 5 quarts of 5W-30 Mobil-1 synthetic, where they threw in a new Mobil-1 filter for free. Check it out.

dino or synth whatever, it dosen't matter unless your planning on going over 5k on oil changes....dino is just as good as syn when it comes to how it protects, dino just can't go as long on oil change intervals....i've ran dino in everything i've owned and it works great, by dropping synthetic in a motor its not going to boost anything but how many miles you can go before you have to drop the filter and plug

As far as the motor CID, you "should" be able to tell from the VIN, if it was rebuilt/replaced with a same motor. I need to check back to the dusty parts of the brain for the older codes though, sorry.

i disagree with not boosting anything. In my G8, i put synthetic in it at 1500 miles, saw an increase. my wife went to get an oil change and didnt, lost 1.4 mpg instantly...so i put the synthetic back in it and got it back. In my 09 silvy, i saw about a 1.2 mpg increase not changing anything but the oil. There are SO SO many others on here and every other truck forum on the web that can attest to this. It might not help your 20y/o truck as much as it helps the newer ones but it does help. Its not just some ploy to get you to spend alittle extra on an oil change, its proven to be more efficient.

As far as the same protection with dino oil, synth exceeds in wear and breakdown protection and thats been scientifically proven....if it "just cost more" why would every, yes EVERY high performance vehicle come off the line with ONLY synthetic oil in the block?

O'Reillys is now running the $29.99 special for 5 quarts of Mobil 1 and a Mobil 1 oil filter.

IMO synthetic isn't worth it unless you are going to do extended drain interverals.

I agree with this statement, especially if the engine has already been rebuilt. Just change your oil at the right time and your engine will have less wear than a synthetic oil engine run at long oil change intervals.

they perform the same when it comes to wear for the everyday driver, synthetic holds up better to extreme beatings like towing because its made of polymers..as far as mileage gains, unless your running synthetic in freezing temps or running lower then stock weight oil, an increase in mileage is unlikely in my opinion...the only reason it would ever increase mileage would be that the motor dosen't have to fight the oil during revolutions..say from cold temps.....p.s 1 mile is by no means a reason to rush out and get synthetic lol, its a truck not an aveo

I'm a SYN person myself. Up here in cold weather it's invaluable, it litterally takes away all -20 degree starting problems. I also have to jack my truck up to do an oil change which I don't like to do that often, so I have to change the oil less with SYN. Added gas mileage is a benefit of SYN too and has been well documented.

The question is this: Does the extra cost justify the purchase? To me yes, to others (warm climates and easy oil change ability) probably not.
