4.3 Performance

Is there anyway I can get a little bit more power out of my 4.3 Vortec without spending an arm and a leg? I have an exhaust on it right now and I just some more power out of it.

gears or a tune....gears will rape your mileage....the 4.3 isen't much of a power house, its just a basic motor to move the truck from point A to point B.....its a solid and reliable motor, its just not going to haul or tow anything

p.s the exhaust/ or CAI will not increase anything as far as numbers..the stock intake and exhaust are pretty good

I dont plan on towing or hauling anything with it anyways. I know its not a real powerhouse, I just want a little bit more out of it just to suprise people.

gears, tune, or blower are your best options....don't get suckered into stupid shit like "special spark plugs", the truck for the most part is peaked out in stock form minus stuff like the factory tune, or gearing...what gears do you have currently? i had a buddy that had the 4.3 with 3.42s and it was a slug

what kind? check the glove box for a GU(instert number) your probaly geared high like 3.42s or something...you go lower the motor will run at higher rpms which will hit the power faster and easier

A blower would be great. Those that are being put on the new v6Camaro arecrazy. Getting 380hp from a 3 point something. By the way. This is stupid, but I towed a 9500lb triaxle trailer and skid loader with my 99 silvy 4.3 one in a while. Great little motors

i had a friend with a 2000 rcsb like yours with a 5 speed and went from 3.08's....yes 3.08's to 3.73's and it made a HUGE difference. he lost 1 mpg on the highway and stayed the same in town. Gears are your friend with an underpowered vehicle.

Some what of topic, there was an article that some car mag did with the 4.3L. They put a cam and ported the heads, put a supercharger on it with like 15PSI and it made 500hp at the crank before it blew the head gasket. I would think that those little 4.3's are sleepers if done right, and still have the bragging rights of it being a V6, somewhat like those old GN's.

It would take at least 10 grand to turn a 4.3 into any kind of real beast. And it would eat itself into parts in no time.

OP...In a full size truck, there's really not much you can do except drain your wallet and make it louder. That truck will never surprise anybody with power and speed. You would be better off buying a salvage 5.3 and dropping it in there. Even then, you'll be running about as fast as the average V6 sedan.

Not worth messing with.  Keep that 4.3 for 20 years, 300k miles and spend the money you'll save not buying a new truck on something fast ... maybe an old small-block Chevelle or Nova!

best thing to do, is scrap it. go to a scrap-yard and find a 6 litre....and BANG. ur truck is faster than the road runner himself. if you were around here i know where i could get you a 6 litre with computer with 45k kms on it for 2500 bucks!

Yes. Install it in a 500 lb go cart.

It's worth messing with if he likes his truck and thinks its worth putting money into. If it were me I would get a tune. Probably the cheapest and easiest way to get more power out of it.
