So im in the national guard and im set to deploy in about 40 days.. but sunday i was playin with my buddies little kids on the trampoline and to make a long story short i was teachin/showing them backflips and needless to say i ended up with my foot 90 degrees to the left and in some good pain...flashforward a couple days now i have a plate and 9 screws in my ankle and the pain is definately somethin i dont wanna deal with again but i think im more depressed about the very real possibility of missing out on this deployment.. ive been workin so hard for the past year to make this happen all to have this come rain down on my parade! the dr's are sayin if i listen to them i could start putting weight on my leg in as little as 4 weeks but if i have any issues could be as long as 10... any tips on dietery changes i can make maybe to better my chances of healing on time? or morale boosters lol

Good luck and the best for your leg!! Try to put some weight it but not much, just a little bit more everyday and you'll back to good before long. As long as you keep exercising and don't loose your strength and endurance it'll all be good.

Damn that sucks man. I would get in contact with a good physical rehab doctor and work with them to get you on the right track. You really want that thing to heal right or your going to have issues down the road that you won't want trust me on that.

i do not think the Army DR's are going to find you fit for duty. with that much hard ware in your foot, it may take months or years to heal. i torn 3 ligaments in my right ankle 15 yrs. ago and it still not right.

but good luck any way :ughdance:

I was thinking that, but had to be positive even if it was out of the question.

Make sure you have a good diet and that will definitely help you heal faster.

I sprained both ankles BADLY playing basketball (pick up games) my freshman year of college. The doctor told me it would have been better if I would have broken them because they are so messed up with ligaments and all. They roll in the blink of an eye and its very painful to do.

Hope you get better man. Just take it easy and don't try to do too much.

good luck sounds painful.

I broke an ankle when I was young and its not fun

My dad was hit by a forklift at work and broke both ankles. Has plates in screws in them to this day (20 yrs plus). Best advice do whatever therapy they give you. It will be painful but will be helpful to strenghten it (my wife is a PT I know)

At least you are bummed out over it...

Some people wouldn't be....case of NATO Knee as we call it. Every time the ship sails they have something wrong and can't go.

Like others have said man...do everything they tell you to do to the best of your ability. There will be more deployments, and I am sure you will get to go on another one. But if you don't follow the doc's direction you may never be able to deploy again.

Take in lots of calcium for bone development, Vitamin C (3-5X your recommended daily intake) and protein for muscle recovery, and onions and garlic (not powders, the real deal) for ligaments and tendons.

thanks for the suggestions guys, im a 92b for those that asked ( all wheel vehicle mechanic) but our mission had alot to do with truck gunnery so i was tasked out as a gunner, and was very excited about it. Ive come to the realization that there is absolutely no chance for me to go but everything happens for a reason and I'm good with that I guess, I dont wanna go at 75% and put my buddies lives in danger just because i lied and said i was good and end up with issues. One of my platoon leaders just went through this same process and had a good talk with me!

Damn good advice. Sounds like a good platoon leader.

Like I said man...there will be lots more deployments. Better to sit one out and go over for another one, and get the full deployment, than it is to go now and end up being sent home cause you broke yourself more and can never go again...Or worse like you already touched on.

I've never been over on a land deployment, I am navy...But I can tell you, there's a tonne of fun to be had, you make real good close buddies, its a great experience....but with that comes a tonne and a half of cock.

Motto for my last deployment was BOHICA...:D

I know a few of you guys know what that means :D:P

Damn, that sucks. Hopefully you recover fast enough to deploy, even if it means you will be sitting behind a desk.

I got one hell of a sprain in Kuwait back in February '03. We did a five or six mile ruck march through the sand at Camp New Jersey with everything: loaded MOLLE ruck, squad equipment and the promask that went everywhere with us. I rolled an ankle in the last klick or so, jumped up, then rolled it again after a couple of steps. Nowhere near the same as a broken ankle, but after a week of RICE and ibuprofen/naproxin I was in a hasty fighting position in Iraq.
