09 Sierra Has Horrible Throttle Response

I absolutely hate this drive by wire throttle control we have. It seems as if i hit the go pedal and nothing happens like it should. No torque off the line, no downshifts when there should be one, and just a total lack of power until the motor hits 3500-4000 rpm which is when I suspect the computer finally lets the engine live up to its potential. This is my first vehicle with drive by wire and I HATE it! I have seen a lot of discussion about custom tunes from various people but it seems like an expensive fix for something that GM should have programmed correctly from day one. I have also read that it is due them wanting to make their transmissions last 100K. However with all of my other vehicles that had a throttle cable, the transmissions have never had a problem making it to 100k. So I'm calling BS on the transmission theory. This is practically the only issue I have with my truck so I hate to spend $250 or whatever it costs to do a custom tune to fix this one and only issue I'm having.

Does anyone know if there is an updated PCM flash from GM that rids our trucks of this issue? Is there a TSB I can point my local GMC dealer at that addresses this problem? Or am I stuck paying for a custom tune? Anyone have any other options for me?

Thanks in advance,

Dean

Thanks for the quick reply MS3Dale, any idea what the cost would be for a tune like that? I checked out the blackbear site and there are a bunch of different prices for different tunes and I'm a little lost there.

Thanks again,

Dean,Most of us had an "in-person" tune done on our trucks where Justin came to us and tuned them while we were driving,I think thats the best way to do it,that way he can make adjustments while you drive,An in-person tune is $250.00

He does offer mail order tunes as well in a few different ways, the most popular now is going to be the AutoCal setup, that way he can email tunes to you and you then download them to your truck yourself, those run $549.00 for the AutoCal unit,he also offers a scan-cable tune where he sends you some cables and you drive your truck for awhile recording your driving habits,he then builds a tune based on that info.,those tunes run $300.00 (plus a deposit for the cables)

Feel free to send Justin an email with any questions, keep in mind though that his wife Jenna just had their first little one yesterday (A boy!) so it might be a few days before he's able to respond back.

Well when you think about it, engines have not been putting out the kind of HP that trucks now are. More HP & torque = more stress on the tranny = early tranny failure. It is not BS.

Hey Dean,

I just got done having mine done using the autocal system and it is great. The tune is really set-up for your truck and he does a great job improving the throttle response and the shifting you your truck. Once you get the tunes from Justin it takes like 5 minutes to install and you are ready to go. This is the best way to go.

the factory computer cuts power way back.also the delay is suposed to eliminate drive line clunking.my response now is great thnks to black bear!

Another vote for a BB tune. The throttle response in mine was improved 100%... BIG DIFFERENCE

The drive by wire has little to do with extending trans life. Just like the throttle cable has little to do with trans life. What you most likely heard was someone "dumbing" it down to make it more understandable.

Essentially it is like this.... GM has reduced the "power" when it is not really needed. For example, there is no need to smoke the tires in real life. They want to improve the average consumers experience with their product by making it as durable and pleasurable as they can. Note that the average consumer is not interested in driving like it is a race car. They simply want to go from point a to point b as efficiently, smoothly, and reliably as they can. Then you have the government that has its own rules that GM has to play by. Those rules control noise, emissions and economy. They help extend the life of the powertrain as well.

Looks pretty cool. Who's willing to be the Ginny pig?

Link didn't work for me, but I did a search on it. It appears that all the device does is change the linearity of the throttle potentiometer (or whatever GM uses on the throttle pedal to produce position change signals). In other words, pressing the throttle 1/4 way would signal the ECM that you had pressed it more, say 1/2 way, making the vehicle FEEL like it was quicker. It doesn't do anything to actually cure the Power Nannies that GM programmed into the ECM.

I could be way off on this, but to me, it is a waste of money.

I know the nannies on the GMT900s are bad but how are they on my 03 Silverado? How much of a difference will an in-person tune make over stock?
