Different Size Rear Wheels

Had a flat rear tire the other day (285/70/17) and my spare is a stock 275/70/17 i think that is what it is. So to get going, i took off the rear flat and put the spare on the front and the front 285 on the rear. I was worried about the rear locker sensing the different RPMs and locking at speed or something. The size difference is not too much, but i just wanted to be safe.

Would this small difference in rear tire diameter be enough to mess with the G80?

Not sure. I would think it might. Good move on switching from front to rear. Just get the tire fixed because running a different tire size is never a good thing on any part of a vehicle.

I've wondered the same thing myself. Usually, the spare is a 265/70/17, which is about an inch shorter than the 285's. That might be enough to cause a problem. I'm sure someone will chime in that knows for sure.

yeah i meant to say the spare was a 265. The locker from what i recall reading senses a 100 rpm difference before engaging. Would the different rpms of the two different tires increase with speed or will the different rpms remain constant at all speeds? And is there a <100 rpm difference in 285 vs. 265? Wheres the mathletes?

You will be fine, but dont leave it that way go get it fixed it lol seems like it coulda been corrected by now instead of postin about it!!

No harm to the G80 if you used the spare long enough to get tot tire store and have the other one fixed or replaced. I'd imagine there would be some accelerated wear if you left it long term with two different sizes on the one axle, but I bet it would take a long tome to show up.

at 75 MPH the difference between a 32" tall tire and a 33" tall tire will be roughly 70 RPM. So its unlikely that you'll engage the G80.

However, its not good to run different sized tires on an axle with any clutch type carrier for obvious reasons. Will you fry it if you drive it to get home like that? of course not. Will you cause a problem leaving it on for 20,000 miles? Yeah... id say so.
