Utility Trailers

I'm looking at small utility trailers (4x8 or 5x8) and was curious if anyone has had good (or bad) experiences with the mesh floor type trailers? Basically I will be mowing my mother-in-laws lawn (lives about 1 mile away) and would like a trailer to haul my large walk behind mower and weed eater as well as have the ability to load up a bbq smoker to trailer to competition. Max load will be a couple hundred pounds. I like the wood floor trailers but they are several hundred dollars more than the same size trailer with mesh floor. Some of the trailer dealers have scared me a bit saying the mesh floor will sag over time. i guess I would rather spend the money on larger trailer tires because it seems all the trailers I looked at have good support on the floor.

The sag you mention is a concern on some brands of those type trailers. I have seen where people lay treated plywood in the bed for the heavier equipment to rest on. The advantage to the mesh trailers is they are light and easy to move by hand

I have had my 5x8 mesh floor trailer for 10 years without any problems. I use it to haul my 4wheeler. When I'm not riding my atv it is being stored on the trailer in the garage and has been for the entire time I have had the trailer. I haven't noticed any sort of sag with mine. This is just my personal experience though.

I Like the wood floor trailers myself. The mesh floors always sag between supports if you use it for anything heavy. I've had a 16 foot dual axle trailer since 1997. I've hauled about a dozen cars on it! I replaced the 2x8 flooring in 2009 which took all of 2 hours and was cheap. This poor trailer lives outside in the weather on a parking lot in between uses (about twice a year).

Yup, get the trailer and put some 3/4" plywood pressure treated on the floor.

i have a 4x8 mesh trailer and it did not last too long.. it got all saggy and bent so you gotta just put plywood on its way cheaper

if your tailgate is mesh too put wood on that !! mine nearly caved in one time driving an atv up it

I haven't owned one with a mesh floor, but I do have a 16ft dual axle with 2x8 flooring. The nice thing about the wood is that when you haul mulch or something similar, the small pieces don't fall through the floor, and the pitchfork doesn't get hung when you try and unload it.

My trailer also sits outside, and was bought in 1997. I still have the original wood on it, with no need to replace any time soon from the looks of it.

I don't have one myself, but I have friends that have had gussetts welded in for additional support on the mesh floor. Typically if the mesh is bent or sagging, it means the trailer was overloaded.

I have a 6 x 10 landscape/utility trailer that I put my zero turn lawnmower on and I haul wood and stuff. It has the mesh gate that lays down as a ramp and wood floor. I love it and it works great its small enough to move by hand and big enough to haul what I need. I went to home depot and gave 1050 for mine and that was 200 dollars cheaper then most places. I had to go with a 6 feet wide because my mower is 50 inch cut so the deck is pretty wide so make sure you get a big enough one to fit what you need. I would spend the extra buck for the wood and the extra width.

depends on the brand, and also how much weight your going to be putting on it...wood rots(even treated lumber rots eventually) but so does metal...i've loaded my fair share of them with alot of weight and it seems the tires and leafs are the weakest link....just the other day i bent a dodge's bed with 90 bundles of shingles on a pallet lol
