8.1l Ticking

Hi i have a 2001 Gmc2500 HD SLE 4x4 with the 8.1L engine, recently upon startup ive been geting a tick on the right(drivers side) of the engine the tick goes away after the truck reaches maximum temperature but every time i accelerate even at maximum temperature around 1.6K revs+ i hear the tick.... i think it may just be a sticky valve or somthing but id like to know all the possabilities and if thats really what it is and possably the cost to fix it.

thanks guys

Might try a different oil. If you're running dino oil, try a synthetic. Some people have tried using something like Lucas oil treatment and have reported good results for situations similar to yours

thanks but i do think that if the reason its ticking or 'fluttering' if you will is because of sludge and im not so sure if the lucas oil can penetrate that, plus im not too fond of additives in the first place my mechanic says to stay away from them. The other thing is im not exactly sure its the oil thats causing the sound i dont even know if its the valve or not really it could be anything even a leak in the exhaust. thanks alot though and i use Quaker Horsepower and added a quart and a half of shell cause it burnt through some recently i think maybe because ive been driving it slightly harder, not like beating on it or anything but i mean versus what i usually do for MPG (drive like grandpa)

anyway thanks for the help

If it's lifter related you might try a different synthetic and see what kind of results you get. Mobil1 etc...

I'm not in favor of additives either, just reporting what others have said

yeah people have told me that mobil 1 is really good but they told me that for the truck i have its an overshot and i should just use like mobil clean 5000 or 7000 or whatever it is and change every 2 to 3k miles. what do you think?

My 8.1L seems to really like 5W40 synthetic oil.

that tick sounds like a freshly broken exhaust manifold bolt, once everything is up to temp and grows it seals back up, my 5.3 acted like this before i replaced the broken bolts and gaskets

I think the 8.1 shares the common exhaust manifold trait with the 7.4l. The manifolds have a tendancy to crack creating a tick while the engine is cold. As the engine warms up, the manifold expands causing the crack to some what seal itself. good luck finding it with all of the heat shields. If this is it, I hear that headers are cheaper than factory replacements.

Good luck.

wow great thanks guys! but how can you rule out somthing like a valve or a lifter so soon? i mean my mechanic did think it was a manafold leak but i dont know theres sometimes a light tick combined with a heavier fluttering sound? but yeah how can you so easily rule out a sticky lifter or valve. and the new headers sounds like a great idea ive been looking into some but im not so sure on what to get if he cant just plug the hole

thanks again but still i mean okay by now ive realized that the most likely thing is an exhaust leak of some sort most likely the manafold. but REALLY why couldnt it be a sticky valve or messed up lifter?

i have an 01 6.0 . had a ticking problem at 1500 rpm. ended up replacing the engine. the tech at the dealer told me they had some cam and lifter issues. noise was coming from inside the engine. would tick at idle, worse when cold but still tick when warm. at 1500 sounded like loose marbles in the motor. hope this is not your issue. had the problem since 9000miles and got the motor replaced at 105,000. so it was there for awhile.

Woah yeah i really hope thats not the issue im really thinking its somthing along the lines of an exhaust leak... you sound like your camshaft bearings were shot and a new engine would of just been cheeper(since i hear theyre hard+expensive to replace) but yea thank you for your input

dont want to scare you. but i owned my truck since new, had issues like i said since 9k. brought it to the dealer several times and was told it was piston slap. well at 105k i was using a quart of oil every 600-1000 miles. got frustrated and called gm cust service. brought it back in and was told cam lifter issue and probably scored cylinder walls. well gm ended up helping me out. i ended up paying $1000 out of pocket, and now have a new motor w a 3yr/ 100,000mile warranty. good luck with yours. hope its just a cracked exhaust manifold or broken bolt. good luck!

ive noticed this same ticking from my drivers side.. sounds like an exhaust leak. i checked the entire exhaust and didnt find anything, how can i tell if the manifolds cracked?
