that did not go well - unpluged harness and it set the lamp but we expected that - what was weird was when we pulled out of the shop and got on the highway we had no power as if it was running on v4 mode - the dic said v8 mode and the tech 2 said cyl deactivation off but it sure acted like it was in v4 mode. so gm is not going to let you just unplug it.

Humm now you got me wondering if you can unplug them then jump them out where they think there plugged in.

maybe this is where the real test can be done... get the AFM turned off with a tune and monitor the change in oil consumption...

I turned mine off via a tune with 6k on the clock. I have 26k on it now and not burning a drop according to my last oil change(this past weekend).

Wouldn't the problem be the lifters themselves, not wether or not you have the afm working. I would think you would have a set of bad lifters that need replacing under warranty.

Well there is so much debate about what is the root cause of the oil loss. I am really waiting to see/hear more from 5.3AFM engine owners that have turned off the AFM with a tune. The ones that 'tune' it off early in the engine life seem to have pretty consistent reports of no oil loss during the life of the engine.... now we need to hear from people who have 'tuned' off their AFM after the engine has become a chronic oil-burner. There may not be an immediate change, but I am expecting to hear that the oil loss stops fairly quickly after their engine starts running with no-AFM.

Me too. Based on how it works, normal operation is the same as a non-AFM motor. When AFM activates, it bypasses oil through a special series of channels (the same oil that normally operates the valves) and dumps it into the pan. The last TSB I heard mentioned on this site indicated "splashing" as oil enters the pan from the diversion channel. What's odd, is that it only happens on some motors... while most do not.

Wonder if this issue is going to turn into the piston slap in the LS motors..GM saying it's natural and won't affect the engine life.. My T/A never had piston slap, but i know a lot that did that were not happy with the Generals response...

had mine tuned out around 20,000 miles, and im not burning any oil. i do have the lifter tick in the morning though

I had the morning tick and had the lifters replaced under warranty. There quieter now, but i still worry about oil consumption. I wish GM would have let me put in regular lifters from an older 5.3, wishful thinking.

it's a good idea but since i am only burning 1/2 qt every 3k miles it's no big deal for me. it's like clock work too. so i oil change 3k miles later light comes on, add 1/2 quart repeat in 3k miles and then on the third time (total of 9k miles on oil) just change it again.
