Spare Tire Greif.

Well today i went around and checked all the tires pressures, and figured i would try and drop the spare tire to check pressure and the condition (havent dropped it since i got the truck 3-4 months ago). Ive never owned a vehicle with this type of spare lowering device. Well i slide the extensions into the tube, and i dont feel them click into anything or slide into anything. I try to look down the tube with a flashlight but cant see much of anything. It seems like i cant drop the spare tires at all. If i were stuck on the side of the road i would be in a world of hurt. Am i doing something wrong or is the winch type system broken? The cable wont even come down, nothing budged at all. Thanks for the help.

You are not sticking the right end of the rod into the tube...

If that winch has not been used in a long time, they have a real tendency to stick. You should feel a solid connection when the lowering extension hits the right spot in the mechanism.

Haha funny guys. I am sticking the right end into the tube, as only 1 end will fit into the lug wrench used as a crank. I dont feel the extensions lock into anything, spent 20-30 mins trying to get it to work, with no luck. Think the extensions might need a little persuasion with a hammer to fit onto the end?

No, you can stick the wrong end in there...ask me how I know..

 

One of the large female ends goes in there and fits over a square rod in the winch.

 

And it only took me 10 minutes to figure out that I had the wrong end in there. Actually 5 minutes of trying to get it to turn and 5 minutes of thinking I was a tard..

Yup...what he said...I did exactly the same thing on an '07 for a customer of mine....finally got the owners manual out and read it.

Well after sawzalling that damn plastic tube off, i was able to see what i was doing. Lowered down and got caught up on that secondary latch system. After 45 mins of raising, lowering, spraying with PB, cursing, and kicking the hell out of the tire, finally got it to drop. Tried jacking it up in the center like mentioned in the manual, did not work at all. Spare was down to 20 psi and seemed like it was never dropped. Everything is lubed and tire is good to go, thanks everyone for the help.

Unfortunately that sounds about right Nick. Once they have been there for a while they can be a bitch to get loose. Glad you whipped it.

Interesting. I had this problem last winter. Luckily I was at home, but unluckily had a problem with the secondary latch. I tried raising, lowering, spraying with PB, cursing, and kicking the hell out of the tire and no dice. I sawzall'd the SOB off there and just replaced it a week ago. I took some pictures with the intention of making a how-to

Yes, I sawzall'd thru my old hoist's cable. Yes I paid over $100 for a new one Interestingly enough, the new hoist didn't even come with the secondary latch (which I would have cut off anyway). The guy at the Chevy dealer said he's sold a LOT of these things over the past year or so.

 

Glad yours came down. Everyone else go lubricate this NOW!
