Help With New Keys

Hi all,

Could anyone tell me how to tell if my truck needs transponder keys. My manual does not help me. I have a 2007 Silverado LTZ. I only have one key and I need to get another.

Also can anyone cut keys for the truck, if I get a tranponder key from ebay....

I'm betting it does. My 07 GMC had one. If your still unsure, go to Home Depot, and at the key maker machine, they have a quick tester to tell for sure. Takes less than 2 seconds to tell. :smash:

Yes,You have a transponder key (All the GMT900's do)

DO NOT buy a key from ebay, everyone I cut for someone who bought one from ebay does not program,Spend the extra money to get the correct key, either from the dealer or a locksmith.

Right at the 'hilt' (or where the metal key meets the plastic part) if you see an engraved cross inside a circle it means yes, its chipped or coded.

I had a locksmith make me one. He had one in inventory with the GM logo on the head, key + cut + program was under $50... a little high but I don't make a habit of losing my keys so I should never need another (this was for my spare spare key).

I got 3 blanks off ebay a year ago with the chevy logo for like $10 each and had them cut at a locksmith and they worked.

I got extra transponder keys for my Cadillac and Dodge truck fron these guys:

Had them cut at my local hardware store for free and programmed them

myself right at home (you can do this IF you have a original key so no need to

go to the dealer to have them programmed!)

After finding out the price difference I went against my better judgement and bought a key from ebay. I got it cut at Home Depot this morning, programmed it, & it is working fine!

The key cost me about $15 and Home Depot cut it for free for some unknown nice reason..... Anyway it beats paying the dealer huge $$$$ for nothing.

Thanks again for all your help.....

oh, I also bought a new remote for my keyless entry / starter off ebay and it worked out perfect as well.....

Yeah I bought some eBay keys and the kid at Tru-Value cut them for $1.

Programmed just fine since I had the originals.

We did the same for my girlfriend's sister's Malibu. Worked like a charm

FWIW, at the time (a few years back), Tru-Value had a transponder key they'd cut and program for $40. Still better than what the dealer wanted . . .

I bought 2 keys and 2 remotes from ebay a couple yrs ago. All were in OEM GM bags. I had them cut at a locksmith and I programmed both the keys and the remotes. All of them as well as the original keys work fine.
