i need help deciding what truck to get. I have a 2003 chevy silverado 1500hd 6.0L I was thinking about getting a 2500hd 8.1L I don't tow a lot but some. Which trucks faster? Which ones better for some mudding? Which ones better for chasing a coyote through deep snow at 70 mph in the middle of a corn field with?

Matt,

Welcome to the best GM forum around.

I believe the mature guys (I'm one of them) is trying to advise you to go wreck another kind of rig ... and not a truck. YOU might actually need that truck to save your life later ... no use screwing up GREAT GM equipment.

Heck, maybe mud in a FERD.

YMMV,

More motor typically = more giddy-up. Which ones better for some mudding? They'll both do just fine. Which ones better for chasing a coyote through deep snow at 70 mph in the middle of a corn field with? Don't do that.

A couple easy google searches show the 6.0 is 5xx pounds and the best I found on the 8.1 was "shipping weight" which may include a crate and that was 7xx pounds. I'd think the power of the 8.1 would overcome the weight penalty. I think both engines got the 4L80E which doesn't have a very low 1st gear compared the the 4L60E. Mudding is going to be indifferent in pretty much any modern 4x4 with good tires, you need wheelspin and ground clearance. No truck currently made will like 6' of snow and 70 MPH though.

Trucks with the 8.1 have the Allison tranny.
