I know the book sais 5W-30 but alot of sites online say if it stays over 0 degrees F, you're safe with 10W.

What are you guys running ??

Either way it will be Mobil one synthetic, but this will be my first change, so I want to use the right oil

Thanks

That is the ONLY forum I have seen provide good oil related advise. You ask on a car forum and you get answers based on marketing and misconception.

If you look in the Used Oil Analysis section there you can see what oils actually work well in a vehicle like yours. Been awhile since I spent much time there but when I did M1 was showing consistently high iron wear numbers in smallblock Chevys of all generations.

Not another oil thread. :idiot: Either one, just put it in and drive.

if you don't like the threads.... don't answer them!!!

Excuse me, but this thread is old and at the time we had like 4 oil threads going on about nearly the same damn thing. Think before you speak next time. :idiot: ........n00b :idiot: I didn't even mean it in a bad way for pete's sake.

LOL

To answer your question...the number in front of the W is basically the cold viscosity of the oil....if you live in a cold climate, use using 10W is not advisable. If you live in very cold climate...use 0W

5W is good for just about all climates....except extremes.

Synthetics are even better with flow characteristic in the cold...10W synthetic nearly flows as good as 5W Dino oil at the same temps.

Long story short....unless your living in Alaska...5W30 Mobil1 will suit your needs perfectly. And for most other places so will 10W30.

When in doubt though...use recommended oil...its recommended for a reason.

I did live in Alaska for the first two years I had this truck & always ran 5W-30 without any problems. Always started without hesitations or any abnormal noises/vibrations. I'd just use what the good book says for your temps, whatever they may be.

Trouble is that yes while an oil spec is recommended "for a reason" more and more often that "reason" is CAFE rather than what is best for the engine.

Isn't that the absolute truth! All the more reason I keep the receipts for repairs so when my engine takes a dump I have a better case to get a new engine at someone else's expense...if I were to actually win that is...

Specs of oil yes...not viscosity.

Specs are like API and now dexose...this has little to do with viscosity, as the certs are given to all oil viscosity.

It even gives you a handy table in your owners manual of what viscosity oil to use under a given temp range....

And I just realized....OH NO ANOTHER OIL THREAD ......

The viscosity most definitely is spec'd because of CAFE. You look up cars sold here and then the same exact engine sold outside North America and they get thicker oil. The viscosities are also a RANGE not a specific measurement
