Is your GMT-900 using oil

According to the Service Manager my intermittent hesitation could be form the PCV valve getting oil into it. I don't know if I buy that yet, but I need to be able to get them to reproduce the issue which is a bit tough on this one.

 

It was just one of the things I needed to have looked at by my dealer. Overall I love the truck, but really think my gas milage is a bit low. I had a 1999 silverado Extended cab with the 5.3 and 4 speed tranny and 3.71 rear and even with 200000+ miles was still getting around 16mpg. My only complaint about the 1999 was the Tranny, which blew at 213k and that the extended cab became a bit small for my 2 kids in the back.

 

I keep thinking that if I swapped out my 20" rims and the 275/50/r20 tires with a set of 17" rims and 255/75/r17 tires that I would get much better mpg, but I have nothing to prove it one way or the other. I will probably get a pair of Aluminum 17" rims this summer off of Ebay as I do prefer the look of those rims better than my 20" rims.

Got my truck back from the dealer to start consumption test. At dealership I checked oil and it was way past hash mark, they took it in and gave it back saying it was all set. It's been sitting in my driveway for a few hours now. My driveway is not quite level so the nose is slightly higher than back. In checking the oil again it is still about a quart past hash mark. So I'm going to take a picture with my cell shortly and contact the Service Manager. Seems like GM is trying to prevent having to do a full workover of the vehicle.

I used 1 full quart of Mobil 1 5w30 in 3000 miles, I usually change it around 3-3500 miles. Mixed city and highway and Im getting 14.8-15 mpg on the DIC, winter blend gas is terrible.

My 08 still is problem free at 80k, I have been changing my own oil for the last year and kept a close eye on it. At most, it was 1/2 quart low. Just using plain old Pennzoil 5-30.

Update: Just hit 1000 miles since the piston/ring job. Oil is right where it was when I picked the truck up.Full. It is also a clean honey color still. Before the job it was dirty after 500 miles at oil change. So far so good. :thumbs:

Frank. Take it back in and have them remove the excess oil or your consumption test will be wrong.I had the same problem with first test.Manual says 6qts but it don't hold that much.

Awesome be sure to let us know what happens! People laugh when I used to go to the dealer for service. I check the oil and check my valve caps. Why? Because they lose or unscrew them so why should I trust they put oil in it?

Finally got some time to get to the dealership and we have adjusted the oil level so that it is now right at the top of the cross hatch and also covering the top dimple. We now have a known good baseline to start the oil consumption test.

 

Now we'll see if the truck continues to use oil at the same rate as before.

UPDATE: New piston and rings at 86K......Now at 94K and has used 4 qts......Wondering if I should take it back to see if they will do anything else??

 

Started drinking down the oil again....at 102k notice down about 2 qts after a 700 mile trip in November...Just drove 2000 miles over the holidays and I am now at the bottom of the stick..Don't know what say or do next?

2007 Tahoe with 50,000 miles and it has been using oil for the last 6000 miles. Recently it blows quite a bit of smoke at start up, so I took it to the dealer and they diagnosed the AFM pressure release valve under TSB #10-06-01-008 and $1500 to do the work. What does anyone suggest?

I have a 2009 Silverado 5.3 AFM non-flex fuel engine - with 27,000 miles on it. I believe it has an iron block (what code is the aluminum block), I have not check the oil nor kept an eye on consumption. Is it by the vin number?

 

Is this across the board on iron or aluminum block?

 

Is the defect the piston/rings but the bore is true/straight correct ?

 

I am going to start monitoring mine, since it is now 4 years old and the warranty only goes for 5 years/100,000 miles on the PT right?

I don't know if I would trust this.. What about oil in the filter? Through out the engine? I'd go by before and after on the dip stick.

 

hot oil VS cold oil, filter, settling time etc, all factors. Engines should be drained hot. This ensures all the contaminents your oil is designed to absorb come out when you drain it, and leave it drain for at least 15 minutes. The oil should be full when hot and no lower then 1/2 way down the operational area of your dipstick when cold. Like others have mentioned, Collect drained oil and compare with oil added. Id say any oil consumption is unacceptable from a new truck.

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
