Sensor On Ground Cable?

I do not have a truck that has one but if you are saying it is a sensor that wraps around the ground and has a smaller wire coming out of it then most likely it is a Hall-effect sensor that senses current. It would be used by the ECM to control alternator output. The GMT-900's have the ability to drop the alternator output to a minimum to help in fuel savings.

Battery Current Sensor

The battery current sensor is a serviceable component that is connected to the negative battery cable at the battery. The battery current sensor is a 3-wire hall effect current sensor. The battery current sensor monitors the battery current. It directly inputs to the BCM. It creates a 5 volt pulse width modulation (PWM) signal of 128 Hz with a duty cycle of 0-100 percent. Normal duty cycle is between 5-95 percent. Between 0-5 percent and 95-100 percent are for diagnostic purposes.

Basically, It allows the charging system to charge only as necessary depending on the load put on the battery.

Removing the sensor will not allow the battery to be either under charged or end up overcharging and ruining the battery.

The system works just fine as is.

Good info. Exactly what I was looking for. Looks like I will be replacing the ground cable then. Thanks,

who said anything about removing the sensor?
