CORAL GABLES—

Starting this month, the city of Coral Gables will issue warning notices to owners of pickup trucks who do not park their trucks inside their garages at night.

Since the 1960s, the city has banned people from parking their pickup trucks in their driveways or on city streets from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

After Aug. 8, Coral Gables will start issuing tickets to people who violate the parking ban.

The city has resumed enforcement of this controversial law because last month, the Florida Supreme Court decided not to consider an appeal by Lowell Kuvin, who sued Coral Gables in 2003 after code enforcement officers cited him for parking his pickup truck on a residential street.

City spokeswoman Maria Rosa Higgins Fallon said, "Historically, Coral Gables has gone through great lengths to preserve its character through the enforcement of its zoning code, a reason why in a downward economy, property values in Coral Gables have fared better than in other neighboring communities."

Fallon said Tuesday she didn't know how much fines would be.

Critics have said the ban on the overnight parking of pickup trucks is outdated and unreasonable.

LOL what if you don't have garage?

Or what if your garage is like my old one and the truck doesn't really fit. I wonder what they would do if you had an el camino.

Them uptight yuppies won't stand for that either !!!!

To them pickuptrucks equal troublesome redneck rebel boys or minority

workin' folks who may spoil their view of their goofy bmw or mercedes tin cans..............

The only time they want to see a pickuptruck is the day that the "workin stiff"

is tending their lawn.

My sister lives there and is one of them!

This sort of thing is commonplace all over the country. We've even got a municipality here (Nichols Hills) that passed the same thing.

Those are the rules, you don't like them...A) Lobby/campaign like a mofo and get it changed or B) Move.

That's what the members of that community decided upon...That's their choice.

I'd go with option C- never even consider living there in the first place. Same thing with home owner associations- If I own a home, there is no way in hell I'm gonna let some group of whinos tell me what I can and can't do with my property. I'm not looking to let the lawn grow to a jungle or keep 8 cars in my yard but to say what I can or can not park on my own property or things of that nature is absurd. But if barring pickups from driveways helps the yuppie scum in Coral Gables sleep better at night, more power to them. Just another place I'll make sure I never spend a cent of my own money.

Most places won't let you buy the house if you don't join the HOA. I didn't know about the one at my last house until closing. I was PISSED.

I can go on and on for hours on the pratfalls of HOA living. But I won't.

My current house has no HOA. And whaddayaknow...Everybody keeps an immaculate yard and no dead cars in the driveway. Hell, there isn't a boat or RV in the driveway in my entire neighborhood (one street).

I don't live in a town that has anywhere that could classify as a neighborhood, it's too rural. I would also not buy a hose if an HOA was required. I'm not in the market for a home at this time but I can safely say I've never thought less of an otherwise nice property because someone up the street is a slob. And I'd never do a subdivision- a small one was built here in town when I was probably 12 or 13 and back then I hated it because all the houses had small yards (3 acres or so, and yes I realize this is a lot of land to some), they were close together and there were no trees/wooded areas to play in. Now as an adult (in the eyes of the law only I suppose :dunno:) those things still bother me but the worst thing only came when I fly into a airport in a bigger city. As you come in for the landing you overfly the suburbs of the city and the subdivisions are all very obvious from the sky and I just get sick to my stomach seeing sprawl like that. I can't tell you what I don't like about it, I just don't like it.
