Onstar My Link And Remote Start Add.

I just had the remote start programmed by the dealer, but no remote start via the onstar app. I was really hoping it would work, but, I guess it's a hit or miss whether it works or not, and looks like my truck is a miss. Oh well, saves me from paying $18+/month for onstar.

Well, I decided to open the onstar app again today, and what do you know it now shows the "remote start" and "cancel start" options. I guess I will test it out to see if it works. Looks like it just needed some time to refresh?

I had a 2011 that didn't come with remote start via the factory. I had the dealer install mine. At first it didn't show up on my app but then about a month or so after it was installed it just showed up and it worked. I think that onstar needs to do the monthly vehicle diagnostic for it to register with their systems.

Hello everyone, new member here.I recently purchased a 2012 sierra cc 1500 sle and it didn't come with the remote start fobs.after reading this thread about the remote link app,I downloaded it and went to onstar site to enable commands and the remote start icon appears with a temperature icon inside of it.the remote start and cancel icons also appear on the app on my phone.it's it safe to assume my vehicle supports this feature and I just need to visit my dealer to purchase the fobs with remote start and have then programmed to my truck?

bayouslim77 there is a RPO code that you must have before you can just add the remotes and reprogram. I can't remember which one it is now, but best bet is to take your vin into the parts department and ask them to look it up and tell you if you can add it or not. Before I added mine to the truck it looked like it was working on my phone but it could not start the truck until it was reprogramed.:jester:

I just bought a 2014 1500 a month ago. It did not come with Remote Start. Yesterday I had the dealer install the remote start hardware. As everyone else mentioned the RemoteLink app does not show the remote start options. Can someone who had a dealer installed remote start, that works with RemoteLink app, please give the name and location of the dealership they used? I am so pissed that OnStar told me all I needed was the hardware and then it would work. I called them and they said that only a select few dealerships know the work around to get this to work. My dealership obviously doesn't know it, but I don't know how to find out which ones know. Any help is much appreciated!! Thanks in advance!

Bhouse913,

Hello! I understand that you are getting frustrated with the current situation you are in with your vehicle regarding remote start. I would be happy to assist you and work with the dealership to resolve this vehicle issue. Please private message me referencing this thread if I can be of any assistance.

OK GM Customer Service and others...

I have the exact same issue with a 2016 GMC Sierra 2500HD I purchased new a couple weeks ago. Remote start ready but not factory installed. Dealer installed the GM option kit. But the OnStar & MyGMC apps still do not update to include the remote start feature.

We know that this can be done because others on this forum state that they did the exact same thing and the feature did show up correctly.

Here's what I've done so far...

I sent a message to the GM Customer Service user account above. They replied asking me to send an email with additional vehicle info to them. I sent the email as requested. They appear to have forwarded the email to an OnStar CS rep who replied instructing me to press the blue button and speak with an adviser. I did that.

1. Spoke to the Onstar advisor who forwarded my call to a GM CS rep.

2. GM CS rep said that I needed to speak to an OnStar Rep and forwarded me back to Onstar.

3. Onstar CS rep forwarded me to a OnStar tech support rep who said he was in the wrong department to help. Forwarded me to a different tech support rep.

4. Second tech support rep checked the vehicle profile and said the vehicle did not come with remote start. So I explained again that it was remote start ready from the factory but the dealer had installed the option. However, her only ability is to look at the original factory feature set. So I asked to speak to another person.

5. The new person still had no ability to do anything but query the original factory feature set. Even after explaining that others have successfully added GM remote start that included update app capability.

6. I gave up this attempt.

So, this is apparently something that can be done but is not a part of the SOP for doing the option install. As a result, you just have to be lucky with who you deal with.

It just software, so I am fairly certain it can be done.

Reading between the lines. I'd say this is a problem that has to be resolved by GM. From my interactions with OnStar, it appears that their ability to do anything is contingent on the information they get from querying a GM vehicle profile database.

GM Customer Service Questions...

Given that some customers are successful & other not, it is reasonable to suggest that GM and/or GM Dealers hold the answer.

1. Can you find someone at GM that has the ability to update the vehicle profile database that OnStar uses to acquire vehicle information? Perhaps this will help them. FYI, all of us consumers do not draw any distinctions between GM & OnStar. Both just make GM look bad when this type of problem exists.

2. Can you not investigate the successful cases? Figure out why they were successful and revise the SOP for the option install. This make you look really good to us consumers. That seem like the primary function of a department called GM Customer Care.

Thanks,

Jimsto2

    • I certainly could be wrong but I hear of pickups far newer than that 2007 cutoff which may not be going to the wrecker but are having engine work done and be that a reman engine or new engine or trying to repair the existing engine. Some of it would be design issues as per the cylinder deactivation system that GM has and one of those lifters wiping out the cam and the question of oil changes moving the needle or not on that whole mess, or in the case of Ford pickup engines that have the long timing chains and wearing them out and the roller followers and phasers and some of that certainly goes back to oil change intervals. But in those various cases the truck has all sorts of life left in it and so the unfortunate owner and may be original owner or used market owner that is pouring money into repairs so the truck is not seeing the salvage yard yet but damage is happening by infrequent oil changes. A friends son had bought a 2018 I think it is half ton GM and it had some sort of extended or used dealer warranty on it and of course the lifter issue bites and its rattling and so the dealer had to swallow the bill and was at least 7000.00 and I think they only replaced what they felt they had to replace so yeah, I can see that being a ticking time bomb in the not too distant future. Would frequent oil changes cure all these engineering "marvels", probably not but some engine designs have shown that they do much better if the oil is changed a lot more often then if the manufacturer service claims are followed. New trucks cost so much that there is an incentive to keep the existing truck on the road by repairing.
    • get a good code reader, and find out what problems the truck has noticed by reading codes. cheap ones can only get basic engine codes, you may want to get one that can get codes from all the computers in your truck.
    • This is sort of my point, salvage yards aren't overflowing with all these 'poorly' maintained trucks - excellent/good/servicable condition otherwise, salvaged only as a result of a bad engine from poor oil change regiment.    In my area, there are no 2007 to newer gm trucks/suvs in any salvage yards. A few are in the 'recyclers' with very obvious reasons for being there - wrecked.
    • Stabilitrack was a stability control, traction control system, that functioned independently from the transfer case.   Z-71 has nothing to do with the transfer case or differential.   If it does have an AWD system, my memory recalls this being specific to the Denali trim, converting won't be as simple as swapping out mechanical parts like differentials and transfer cases. It will require reprogramming at a minimum. Long story short, not likely worth it.   Pulling a fuse, may disable the AWD system, it might also prevent any other transfer case functions.   However, the AWD case was generally based on the same transfer case you refer to in the 2006 Suburban. If it still has a 4-High and 4-Low where the transfer case locks and splits power 50-50 front to rear, what are you gaining by changing anything? A true-rear wheel drive only, what good will that serve? Not enough to go through the trouble of changing out all the parts.    Generally, all the factory systems will handle a 33" tire and re-gearing. Probably a 35" tire too, if you aren't driving like a caveman. If 35" tires are in the plan...   If you do plan on driving like a caveman or are fully committed to 35" tires, an entire re-think of the build is probably in order. Starting with square one, an IFS front end isn't going to be the best starting point for 35's and caveman driving.
    • 1/2 qt over full ain`t gonna hurt $h!t. Most times, a whole qt won`t either. Most have windage trays now. As long as the crank isn`t slapping itself in the oil, it`s not the end of the world.   We used to overfill 1 qt at the track, at race time. Better to have it over full than having the pan sucked dry at 6500 rpm`s.
