Temp Gauge And Scanner Don't Agree..

Hi,

 

On a 99 old body style K1500 Suburban with a new 5.7 Vortec....

 

The gauge reads about 230 most of the time. Today I hooked my scanner to it and the scanner monitor showed engine coolant temp dead on at 195.

 

Anyone have any thoughts as to why the two would be so off?

 

The only change to the cooling system during the engine install was to eliminate the quick connect heater hose port on the intake in favor of a hose barb (that doesn't leak or require special tools) and to put a new oil cooler in the driver side radiator tank.

Most of the time there are two separate sensors. One for the gauge and one for the ECM. ECM often will be near the thermostat housing, the other will be in the cylinder head. Either sensor could also be a little off due to age. Gauge is not meant to be dead on accurate anyway

I was wondering about the two sensors. My Chiltons book shows the ECM is on the drivers side cylinder head. There's another sensor right by the thermostat as mentioned but I wasn't sure if it was actually a temperature sensor or what. I'll see about testing/cleaning/replacing that one.

 

I wouldn't demand the gauge be dead on but 15-20% difference is kinda high.. :D

Ditto,...... Its on the head not the intake. And they will be off but that is a lot of difference... Sending unit probably..... Unless your having a cooling problem.

Well, this is curious....

 

As mentioned here and in my Chiltons manual the ECM is supposed to be the sender on the cylinder head. That leaves the sender on the t-stat housing operating the gauge....

 

So, I brought it up to operating temp and hooked my scanner up. Gauge read 210 and scanner read 187.

 

I then disconnected the sender on the t-stat housing. The gauge still read 210 but the scanner read -40 and the idle picked up when the computer put it into cold run/full rich mode. So I plugged that one back in and the scanner returned to 187/200 and the guage read 215.

 

I then disconnected the sender on the head and the gauge died but the scanner kept reading 200.

 

By this logic what's been posted here and the Chiltons manual are bass-ackwards.

 

So... My suspicion is that the thread sealer I put on the sender on the head (I didn't want ANY leaks on my new engine, and still managed a couple small oil leaks) is inhibiting the ground on that sender and causing the gauge to read high.....

 

 

Any input?

 

/edit - After thumbing through my manual the emissions and control system chapter refers to the sensor on the cylinder head as the ECT sensor, not ECM. It also says to wrap it in teflon tape when installing so I'm guessing its not a ground issue. :D The manual doesn't state what this sensor is feeding but by my testing the only thing it's sending to is the gauge.

temp gauges don't use a ground.. they are a stand alone circuit, and the sensor has a resistor in the end of it that has a varying resistance(at different temps).. Pressure gauges usually are ground dependant, as they have a 5 v reference, a signal, and a return.

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
