Engine Hour Meter

About 2 weeks ago, I was scrolling thru the DIC and noticed that my truck had .1 hours on it. I just skipped over it and thought maybe it was a glitch or I didn't read it right. I checked again last night and it's at 4.1. Obviously it reset on it's own for some unknown reason. The truck has 62,000 miles and probably had about 1500 hours on it I suspect. The battery has never been dead or disconnected, not that it would matter. Has anyone ever heard of this before?

maybe it resets after 1,000 hours???? like what odometers did back when they "rolled over"

 

having 62,000 if you average 12.4 mph, that is exactly 5,000 hours. at 15.5 mph, thats 4,000 hours and at 20.7 mph that's 3,000 hours, 31 mph @ 2,000 hrs, and finally 62mph @ 1,000 hours.

 

does your DIC read your average speed also? didn't drive mine today and can't remember

How did you get gallons into that equation? It has nothing to do with time. I had about 1500 hours (I'm pretty sure, so I know it doesn't roll over) so 62000/1500=41 miles/hour. Maybe that's what you meant. My driving is mixed about 50/50 highway and city, so I can beleive that is an accurate average speed. It's still like brand new, 4000 hours is alot of wear on interiors. There is no way. It never idles. I was just hoping that dealerships, didn't use this meter ber badem to access value. I wouldn't think so. It just makes you wonder if your odometer will just up-and reset on you.

My 05 3/4 ton truck at work has reset 3 times that I know of. It just turned over to 171000 miles and only has 862 hours on it.

ya dude mine was like 1200 or so and it went back to zero..i dunno. just does it...

I don't know why they even have that meter. The only reason I can think of why it is even there is to make people think they are real truck drivers now. Sort of like why people put stacks on their pickup trucks. All of the user manual maintenance schedules are done in miles and calendar time. Nothing in engine hours.

Lol maybe they wanted these to have time changes like the F16's I work on. We use hours not miles for maintenance.

wow i'm an idiot, i meant miles per hour, not miles per gallon!!! changing OP now!

 

I figured that's what you meant. My 06 doesn't have average speed in the DIC. My 03 did along with a couple of other options they eliminated in the next 3 years to cut costs. I seem to remember it was around 40 mph on that truck when I sold it to my brother. I'm not sure if they added it back in when the 900's came out or not.

My '03 work truck has almost 12K engine hours on it with 244K miles. Now our truck idle most of the day so don't figure a speed average from that but it has never reset. Now my '06 has reset a couple times in the last year. When i bought the truck it said 48 hours and then all of a sudden it had 2 hrs on it, and then got all the way into the hundreds and then reset again. Now it's almost to 300 hours the most i've ever seen and still going. I did read it was a bad cluster something and some dealerships will replace the cluster under a service bulletin type of deal but i haven't tried taking it in yet.

There has been a lot of talk about hour meters reseting over at dieselplace.com. Seems to happen a lot when the batteries are getting older and cranking creates a sharp drop in voltage.
