When To Do First Oil Change

Recommended Posts

I have a 2011 Silverado with 400 miles (had it 2 weeks) and was wondering what folks recommend when to change the oil for the first time. Thanks!

You will get all kinds of opinion's as to when to first change your oil. Some say leave it until the OLM tells you some will say at 3k and some will tell you now. There are even some that no sooner get it home from the dealer and change the oil. It is really up to what you want to do.

I personally change mine out on a new vehicle at 500 miles and then just the oil again at 1500 miles, then the oil and filter at 3k miles. From there it is back to normal oil changes. I have see all of my used oil analysis come back looking better when I follow this schedule then when I didn't and just left the oil in to 3k for my first oil change.

It is up to what you want to do. It really isn't going to hurt anything to leave it in to 3k. Oil is a hobby for me so I like to tinker and follow what my UOA are telling me.

On my 2010 i changed it a 1500 miles. I wouldnt go over 3k. Everyone is going to have there own thoughts on this like oil brand or filter brand.

I do as "Black02Silverado" said on my stuff...... I change my own oil, and I always catch my oil on the first couple oil changes and don't let it go right in the catch drum..... I take a magnet and swirl around in it..... Then I cut the filter open threaded end up.... Drain all the oil I can from the media into the what is now an open can...... Magnet again this time in the oil in the filter can. Next I cut the filter media away from the filter take a clean white shop towel and begin to use carb and choke cleaner to spray the media clean watching for larger particles............ Some may say I am anal about this but....

Its all in the break-in. And break it in like your gonnna drive it.... Whether it be babying it or driving it like you stole it.

I do the same thing on rebuilt engines....... And if we have one come back in our machine shop. Your dang Skippy, I tear it down with the machinist and examine it. Metal content.... You'd be quite surprised what it would have cost us over the years over customer doing something wrong. Like the lock washer we had in the last engine that had a problem..... Thing is when it left our store it was a short block.

If you want to follow motorcycle sbreak in routine, it is 600 miles for the first oil change. Of course, you have those who Do it several times before they get to that mileage.

I like to get the first one done by 500-1000 miles and then follow the OLM using Mobil 1 5W-30 and AC Delco filter. Save receipts for your records.

i do the same, but i also change my front/rear diff's at the same time. these vehicles are not assembled in a clean room..on my old 01, pulled the rear diff cover off and found a gum wrapper stuck to the inside cover..

Some odd reason that doesn't surprise me. While restoring a Hurst/Olds several years ago, I found a tee shirt over the head liner........ It was torn, my guess, it was removed by the man/woman installing the liner tossed on the pile of headliners and missed installing the headliner. It made it from 1979 till 2004 above the headliner.....

I have even found a termination letter in a car once.... I guess the employee got it on the line. Tossed it in the car and walked off. That was a Mustang I was changing the carpet in for a friend.

Heck, I have even seen a 460 Ford, that was missing the connecting rod cap and bolts. Piston was near the top of the bore and the rod was not protruding from the bottom of the cylinder. Engine was being rebuilt, with mounds of miles. Guy said, it always had a miss and the dealer couldn't fix it when it was new.......

A Buick Straight 8 with 6 pistons and rods. Original owner car, he commented that he removed two after the war, because parts were not available, he had forgot doing it until we brought it up after the tear down. But knew where the parts were. He never found them, ended up hunting 2 rods for a number of weeks. He was a mechanic at that time, he also noted it was quite balanced still with only the 6. So, I am guessing he knew exactly which 2 he could pull. My guess was he had one bad rod bearing and had to remove the second for balance issues.
