As Fred mentioned. I'm told Justin at Black Bear is the man when it comes to tuning an LS engine. I believe that with an auto-cal he can download your driving habits and then put a few different tunes on the auto -cal to suit your needs ie: performance, towing, mileage etc.

I felt like my VortecMax got a lot more air with a K&N CAI, but I can't speak for the 6.2 as mine came with one. Pull off your factory intake tube, and if it is as jumbled as the mess was on my VMax I'd consider adding one. Don't know how far down in Missouri you are, but a buddy of mine has a muffler shop in Des Moines and bought a bunch of Corsa cat-back systems from a dealership going out of business and has them for $500.00 installed, full stainless with the polished split Corsa tip out one side or dual with eliptical tip out each side, same price for either. Usually about a grand not installed...

No aftermarket grille. The truck is 100% stock down to the paper air filter, exhaust and factory chrome 20 inch wheels. Honestly fuel economy is unloaded is nearly identical to my 07 with the 4L70 and 3.73 gears.

 

Tow/Haul was used 95% of the time. On previous trucks I haven't liked t/h in city driving, felt like a large stall convertor and wouldn't upshift (especially in an 01 2500HD we had). Experimented a bit and didn't see any change as far as temps go with t/h on or off.

 

I realize LS engines make there power up in the rpm's but never have embraced the idea that 10 hours of 3000-4000 rpm pulling a load is ok. That's where I'll be running with the enclosed trailer hooked up. Trailer weighs 4400 empty and we put 4000 worth of stuff (car, canopy, cooler, etc.) in it. We only make 1 trip a year like that so a gas guzzling HD for the rest of the year didn't make much sense.

 

Now looking at the basics of modding, the replacement Magnaflow muffler, CAI kit and possibly a tune.

 

My bad, I forgot that 2WD NHT's had 3.73's in '07.

Nice work PDYoung. You buy a truck, rip off the front end, re-wire it, and tear apart the motor, all in the pursuit of more power. You've got a giant set my friend. Keep the updates coming, If I ever get a day off I'll try to get some stuff together on mine as well.

 

Jonathan,i picked up a boost gauge and hooked it up. I was kind of let down when i was only seeing 5 lbs of boost. I went back looking to see if i could find something that advertised the 7lbs i thought i read somewhere. Nope,not mentioned anywhere. So i call Edelbrock and ask what the boost level should be and they tell me 5.5 lbs.I told them i have only 5 lbs and they tell me because i have a magnaflow muffler,that the back pressure is less now,so 5 lbs sounds about right. So you know what i did? Ordered two smaller pulleys. I'm going to go up in boost 2 lbs at a time with each pulley change. I'm going from a 3.750 to a 3.500 and get a tune,then drive it for a week or two before uping it again. If you want to add the boost gauge,i found a pod mount for the a-pillar from a company called Bully Dog that replaces the whole a-pillar trim piece. It comes in black only and can be painted to match,plus it has a hole for the Bose tweeter. What is coming next is a cam from Comp Cams. They have four grinds for the VVT that we have in our trucks,but they are not blower cams. A blower cam needs less overlap. They are working on grinding me a custom cam and springs to match,i might as well get the titanium retainers while i'm at it. I don't know if you know it or not,but these VVT cams let you have your cake and eat it too. They allow you to run a bigger, longer cam for upper rpm horse power without giving up the low end torque.But you have to limit the 50 degrees of adjustment to around 20 to keep the pistons away from the exhaust valves. Also I'm going for a set of big,long tube headers to let it breath. I'm being told that 600 plus horse power at the crank and over 500 at the wheels shouldn't be a problem. These IV generation LS motors are plenty strong enough to take it,just got to keep revs under 7000.Did you see any of the pictures of the Generation V small block or the '14 trucks? Edited by PDYoung

How long did this install take for the Edelbrock Supercharger?

 

Fred M,that supercharger took me and a friend close to 24 hours spread over four days. I'm not an auto mechicanic,but i have always torn my own engines apart and fixed my parents and kids cars and trucks when they break,so i know how to turn a wrench. I earn my money as a machinist. The Edelbrock ad with Mike Rowe from Dirtiest Jobs doing the talking says,installs in a couple of hours,yeah,bull too. Maybe after the 10th one you could get it down to eight hours. It all went together well,they give a nice installation book with good color pictures,but it still takes a while.You thinking about getting one? Edited by PDYoung

Thinking about buying it and trying some of my own tuning.I downloaded the demo version and it seems to have a lot of variables to mess with.Looks like you would have to be trained on how to use it.Maybe if i fry my motor that will give me an excuse to drop in a LSX short block.Hmmmm.

Tell me more about this muffler shop. I am thinking about putting aftermarket exhaust on my truck but I don't want it to be as loud as my 02 with the flowmaster on it.

Ankeny right? It is Iowa Muffler on second avenue just north of University. Guy's name is Pete. He is awesome. I had a 2002 2500HD with the 6.0 liter in it, and we put on a magnaflow with a terrible drone. He replaced it a month later at no charge with a big body magnaflow, same deal. So when I got my '07 vmax I brought it in and he had his guys put on four different mufflers one at a time so that I could pick the one I liked. I went with the flowmaster, uh, super 40 I think it was, and it sounded great. I believe he has four Corsa systems, the dual side sport, the single side sport, and both the dual and single side in the touring version, which is quiet but flows better than stock. All come with the nice polished stainless tips. Give him a call- 515-243-5186, great guy and he'll take good care of you.

Dude, I hope that I don't meet you at a stop light. If they do eight letter license plates where you are I'd sign up for "THEBEAST". It sure sounds like your building one. Also, check my post at the top of this page, it gives you an idea what Black Bear can do for your tune. You could drive with one pulley for a while and gather data for Justin at BB, drive with the other pulley for a while, and he could build you a tune for both pulleys, or all three if you wanted.

Actually it was a GMC CCSB 4WD. Bought it new off the lot, probably still have the window sticker somewhere. 6.0 Vmax with 3.73's. Sold it to a buddy of mine and loves it as much as I did.

My factory exhaust is already 3.5 inch and the Magnalfow kit is $$$ so if anything I'll do the replacement Magnaflow muffler. Pulling an enclosed trailer with a CAI and different exhaust made me pack Tylenol on trips so I won't be adding much noise to this one.

All 4wd, 4 speed nht trucks were 4.10 geared according to all of the GM order guides.
