Tire dressing/tire shine

with the weather getting warmer out, its time to get the bucket and the garden hose out to wash the truck...but i'm on the fence about useing tire dressing, i've had people tell me it causes the sidewalls to rot faster, but yet i've had other folks tell me its good for the tires i have a can of tire shine in the garage that i used on my old set of tread thats just gathering dust...so whats the consesus around here?

I use it, it will not rot your tires most (check what you are using) contain uv protection and such

if you use a good tire cleaner or tire safe degreaser it removes all of the brown haze from a tire and makes them look like nice new tires, it can take few time cleaning them if they are older tires.

I've never had a problem with any tire shine I have used, but in the last few years have found that I like the look of the tire without the shine when they have been scrubed to get all the road grim off. Saves time, money, and energy, plus I don't get the "spin-off" on the side of the truck. But tires with or without the tire shine looks good.

Tires are made from petroleum. The petroleum in tires seeps or migrates from the inside to the outside. Excessive tire shine can prevent your tires from breathing properly, which can accelerate drying of the side wall.

Why does the stuff, i guess any brand, stain the driveway / concrete?

 

it doesn't leave a "mark" but after a rain, you can always see where the car / truck was parked when tire spray / shine was used.

I've used different types of tire shine for 40 years and my tire sidewalls always looked perfect longer than the tread lasted.

Recently I have been using Meguiares Endurance and I really like it. Last a long time and does not sling off.

 

Many years back several of us used no wax floor shine (Bright, Future, etc) with no apparent ill effects. At the time we couldn't afford special tire treatments.

most tire dressings are silicone based, which clog the pores of tires, which leads to dry rotting faster. i prefer Adam's SVRT because it nourishes the rubber, has UV protection, and is water resistant.

 

i also use their All Purpose Cleaner and a brush to clean the tires before all my washes, because it gets dirt and that brown residue off before applying SVRT.

Ive only heard of tires turning brown when you use Armour All.

I use 303 Aerospace protectant on my tires every once in a while and it looks great. 303 is also what I use for the interior of my vehicles and the hull of my inflatable boat so I have plenty of it laying around. 303 has been on the market a while and does a great job with out causing any sort of rot so I trust it for my tires. You can get it at boating supply shops or any of the major online retailers, it is good stuff, try it!

I use Meguires Hot Wheels. It looks good, and it dries nice, doesn't tend to sling off or collect dust if you hit the rock roads. I also take a rag and wipe down the plastic bumpers, fender flares, door handles, etc. with it.

I've used the Armor All tire foam on my truck since i got it and my dad uses it on his denali and it works really well. As for the slinging off, what we do is, once the white foam disappears, use a rag to wipe off the excess. Tire still shines and it doesn't get all over your truck. plus then you have a rag soaked in tire shine to use on the black plastic parts
