At dealer for rear pinion seal leaking

Not my "regular" dealership but owned by the same prople. Called yesterday anout pinion seal on rear leaking, rear housing all wet near driveshaft.... Not happy here! Was told an hour ago it's normal. Argued with the guy for 15min. He called main dealership, they said replace it.

Comes back out a 10min ago, says can't replace under warranty because of lelel kit and rear blocks. Argue with him again, calls other dealership and is again told replace the seal.

Comes out again asking about my CAI and says it may void warranty! This guy is nuts! Glad he doesn't know it's tuned, he would really have a fit about that.

Guess that's what I get for straying from normal dealership. They couldn't get it in until next week so I had to come here. I understand why some of you guys hate going to thr dealer for warranty work, never experienced this before. Some of these service people need to be educated about the vehicles they are going to be working on before they are hired.......just venting a little while I sit here waiting.

I wouldn't have replaced it under warranty either with a 3" lift in the back. The increase in driveshaft angle could very well have been what caused it to fail.

I do not have a 3" lift in the back, or front for that matter. And no, the blocks that are slightly taller that stock had nothing to do with it failing. The pinion seal leak is a known issue, along with slip yoke issue as stated by the dealer. Nothing that was done to the truck caused anything to fail. My brothers truck also leaks, bone stock.

Service manager did say they have teplaced many of those seals for the same exact reason.

Yes Morgan, that's it....

well i am leaving with a rental. The "new guy" ruined the new seal. They have to have one sent from main dealership, not really a big deal. They are also going to take care of the slip yoke TSB while it's there which is probably a good idea. Tech noticed small thump while driving it today, said it's slip yoke issue and they have also seen that before. Have to come back tomorrow and get my truck.

ouch, how did they "ruin a new seal"? my ass cheeks are getting clinched over the "new guys" skills

pinion seals can bite people in the butt if they are not smarter than the truck,

good luck and peek under the truck every now and again

Well, it was explained to me that he "pinched it" trying to "Tap" it into place. I saw the entire thing take place watching through the window.

He was pounding it with a hammer, no seal driver used, just a hammer. That's what happened. First and last time someone else will work on my truck. Should have just ponied up the cash for the seal and did it in my garage, LESSON LEARNED I guess.

At least they removed it the right way using the proper tools.

At the time I figured it's covered under warranty, why not let them do it free of charge....Guess I got my answer of why not to let them do it. O Well, should have it back tomorrow.

Thanks for the reminder, will have to keep an eye on it when I get it back.

I am so glad the shop I was at didn't have that- I couldn't stand customers who would hover around by the shop door (the bay door). I'd usually close it with my remote if I saw one standing around.

Never had an issue with my vehicles I've brought in for dealer service aside from the Tacoma. And Toyota lost a customer for live because of how they handled that. Other than being upset with how the smoke at startup issue I had was handled (which has never happened since) I was extremely happy with my Chevy dealer in NH. I've only been once to the dealer near me in MI but they did a good job I think. Though the winner would be the Subaru dealer I got the Legacy from- they were truly a top notch facility. Even after I traded the car I brought the company-owned Outback in and was still treated great with the sales guys coming over to say hi and whatnot.

in the small town i was a tech in it was hard to tell a customer to leave or get the svc mgr to get them out ,,up north it was NOOO problem to get the svc mgr to yard their ass outa my face lol

LOL.....They have a giant window in the waiting room looking into the garage. The chairs are against the opposite wall, really don't have a choice but to watch. I would never hover by the door, that would really be annoying for the people working there.

what is it with GM vehicles and leaking pinion seals?? My Firebird and 2000 T/A had leaking pinion seals. The trans am had the pinion seal replaced 3 times! Hate to say it but my 2000 F150 has 154000 miles on it and the pinion seal is dry as a bone.
