GM Bed rail caps? Do they scratch?

I have had a set of the GM bed rail caps for two weeks and haven't installed them. They look like they will rub on the out side edge of the box, and scratch the paint off. You guys that have these has this been an issue?

No issue here.

Make sure you push outward as you push down while mounting, and there will be plenty of clearance to get down and get funky with.

The alternative is to not put any and the rails will get scratched and dinged up worse than any little scratches that may happen from the covers.

I haven't had my truck long, but no issues with mine yet either. Like Ryan said though if you use the bed alot, and climb over the rails without any caps they'll end up looking way worse.

installed the 3M clear protective film under mine so it extends out past them by about 1/8"

You should also make sure the top of the rails are completely free of dirt and debris. The 3m tape is thick enough it holds the cover up off the paint. Personally, I would not climb over the side of the truck to get in the box, that is asking too much of the 1/8 inch double sided tape to keep it off the body.

they will wear the paint down to bear metal after a long time, which i personally think is worse then scratches. i usually throw or slide things on the tailgate. i would definatley try and install something underneath like plastic or rubber or something.

that just what i have seen from my experiences with bed rail caps

How do you figure? I had a set on my old 2000 (aftermarket) for 9 yrs. I pulled them off at about 7 yrs because they started peeling off at the end. Put new tape on and put back. They didnt cause 1 scratch. The actual caps sit on tape which is above the paint.

idk maybe mine were just installed wrong. on my 99 sierra i had diamond plate ones on the bed rails that were pretty old and i started to notice a little spot of rust coming out from underneath one of them so i took them off and there were a few spots where the metal was in contact with the body and down to metal. but, who ever put them on used really strong double sided tape but only put really small strips of it in random places.

My brother has a set of the GM bed rail caps on his truck, along with a low profile cover. They are very solid and don't move an inch. When it's really warm outside they get a little bowed but correct themselves when the temp. goen down.

Even with the kids banging on them and picking at them they have not scratched his truck. They are definately worth the money IMO if you are looking for protection on the bed rails......I have never seeen a PROPERLY INSTALLED set scratch the paint of a truck, ever.
