94 Silverado not shifting

Recommended Posts

I cleaned the engine the day before, hope that is just a coincedence. Now the auto transmission will not shift. I can shift to 1st, 2nd, d, and od manually.

Something that might or might not be related, the idle is too high. I am going to twist the distributor to bring that down. Already checked for vaccum leaks.

Twisting your distributor is for adjusting your timing, not idle. Yes it will change the idle but then your going to kill power. As far as not shifting, try a reboot, disconnect your battery for awhile and then reconnect and see. If still not working get it scanned for codes so you can hopefully see what is really going on in there. Sorry don't have any other real suggestions.

OK will try Mark. Don't have time to mess with it till tomorrow. Any suggestions on the idle then, or will a reboot possibly help that too.

I'd get a timing light to ensure your timing isn't off already. The reset may help but hard to be sure. Also Id look at all your electricals to ensure everything is dry. You might still have water hung up in there somewhere.

What do you mean by "clean the engine"? Did you mess with the throttle body or MAF?

Did the foaming engine cleaner and rinsed it with the hose. I had the alternator covered. Isn't the PCM behind the glovebox? Didn't think I had to worry about it. I do need to set the timeing, the last guy did it by ear.

Battery has been disconnected since yesterday. I am going to hook it back up and hope the computer resets.

Edit: Taking it to the mechanic tomorrow to set the timing (don't have a light). I will troubleshoot further after that is correct.

No PCM under the hood, it is behind the glovebox on this truck. Decided to change the transmission fluid and filter, but ran into a problem. Truck wouldn't start at Autozone. Hit it with starter fluid and it fired right up, so bought a fuel filter and changed that.

Started taking the transmission pan off, and realize there is a support bar completly blocking two of the bolts. Is there a secret to getting the pan off?

I hope to get this done today, so I can get the fuel pressure tested too. If that checks out good, I will probably put a new MAP on it.

not on the 94's the pcm which operates the trans in under the hood.

Can you tell me where? I don't see anything but the ABS computer under the hood.

Give us some details on what truck you're talking about. Year, engine etc. Do you think we all have crystal balls?

It's a 94 Silverado with the 5.7 in it. I finally got all the bolts out of the pan, you can't even get fingers on two of them. Thank goodness for flexhead ratcheting wrenches.

I can't get the pan out because of the support.. I will take a picture in a minute.

The bottom left is the bar that is blocking me. The trans pan is going diagnally across the pic.

Loosen the tail shaft mount and raise the tail shaft until the pan will clear. Be careful not to damage wiring/solenoids.

Didn't catch the year listed in your subject title. I just blew right past it. :)

It's the rear transmission mount. Your tail shaft housing should be resting over the crossmember. Should be 2 bolts from the bottom
