Homemade Fuel Barrell

I had an old 30 gallon air compressor that the motor went bad on and it was about as cheap to just buy a new compressor than to replace the motor. The tank was in to good of shape to throw away so I decided to make a portable fuel barrell. I keep an eye on gas prices and buy from whoevers the cheapest, 30 gallons will last me a little while and keep my mower running for several mowings.

 

I cut the motor mount/handle bracket from the top and just relocated it, welded in a new 2" fitting top dead center and replaced the side fitting with another 2" fitting for the fill cap. A trip to Tractor Supply for the pump and filter, a couple cans of implement paint and a decal from ebay and presto!

Thanks guys I was pleased with the way it turned out. I removed the bushing in the bottom that held the drain and replaced it with a plug.

Looks great but having a couple of compressors / tanks myself, I'd be worried about the inside condition of the tank that it isnt leaving rust in your gas. I know whenever i empty my draincocks out, rusty water usually is always present.

I was worried about that to but when I had the hole cut in the top I got a good look inside, it hardly had any rust spots at all and before I welding in the coupling I sand blasted it really good.

Sand blasting the inside of the tank may just make the rust more of an issue. Unless the tank is always kept full, the area above the fuel will start rusting. The tank may have already had a light coating of something to seal it, but after sand blasting, the coating is gone.

I guess we'll see I think it'll be fine plus thats one of the biggest reasons I added the inline filter. We had many steel fuel storage tanks on the farm growing up and always had good luck with them.

Thanks for the tip on the tank sealer stuff, if I start having any rust problems i'll look into getting some of it.
