Dealer detecting if AFM was ever off.

I have read where many with remaining factory warranty's have done custom tunes along with shutting off AFM. I am one with a remaining factory warranty. I am very hesitant of shutting down AFM and then turning back on in case of engine warranty work!

Can a GM dealer tell if whether or not AFM has been shut off in the past? Do the 2010-2012 trucks computers have the capability of storing history codes or information about this?

I am interested but, do not want to void the remaining factory warranty on my truck!!

I have yet to see a concrete answer- I used to think they could not but this spring someone posted a TSB that seemed to indicate they could indeed tell, even if you had reprogrammed back to stock so I've been holding off myself until I see a definitive answer. Plus I want a few more guns first. I don't have to worry about tunes being banned.

I'm pretty sure if they look deep enough they can tell you all the times the ECM has been programmed. And wether or not it was a factory tune. That being said I love my BB tune, however, I'm not in warranty. I would say unless you blow the heads off that thing, they aren't going to look that deep into its history.

I would guess that would be a good assumption. From a commercial standpoint, I watch who takes a wrench to my commercial trucks because I have been known to "tweak" things, including ECM settings. But even then, unless it is something that they need to go into the ECM and look for, a dealership shop will usually not waste the time looking. It is similar to going to the doctor, you usually are not going to get and EKG or MRI done, because you stubbed you big toe. Unless you give them a reason to take a peek at whether the AFM is on or off, the odds are such that they probably won't even look.

I have had the AFM effectively disabled on my 2013 since I first brought it home from the dealership. It has been at the dealer twice for a couple of minor things, and no one has even mentioned anything about the AFM. I don't volunteer any information. To me the dealership is like talking to police. Don't say anything that might be used against you. I don't mention the AFM. I don't mention the oil I am using. I have a strict don't ask don't tell policy regarding my vehicles. I determine what they need to know.

the only time I was questioned on a mod voiding warranty was shorted speaker wiring and the tech "remembered" the PO had a sound system in the truck that was removed....all I had to do was calmly leave the service dept. and get the salesman who sold me the truck and the GM..Guess that's why I buy at the servicing dealer. Hard for them not to "bend Rules" when you bought it from them.

I just took mine in for the recall on the 2014s and was dumb enough to leave my diablo trinity in when they did the reprogram. The service manager just smiled when I picked it up and asked how she ran with the programmer. Long story short, I think it all depends on what the people are like at the dealer. I asked him what he would think when I put my longtubes on and he said as long as I haven't changed anything inside the motor, I would still have powertrain warranty. But my exhaust warranty would be gone obviously.

Now, that is a dealer that is up to speed on the legalities! He would be correct all the way around. Changing the exhaust does nothing to voiding the engine warranty UNLESS it can be shown the exhaust caused the engine failure (not likely). Gotta love a dealer shop that has their act together somewhat.

I believe that Adam at Range Technology said that they call tell how many hours/intervals they AFM is activated or not.

He also said they would have to dig pretty deep for that info on the ECM.

My first question would be, what would they even do with that AFM activity information? After all, it is very realistic for someone to operate only in manual mode and never even get into 6th for quite a long time. And it has been shown that staying in manual mode and not going beyond M5 will limit AFM function. In my neck of the woods, that would not be uncommon. Living rural, If I never got on the interstate and just stayed on the two lane rural roads, I would never get into 6th. And that is exactly what happens. I stay in manual mode and never go beyond M5. Only time I let it go to 6th is on the interstate, and I only use 4 lane roads like that once or twice a month.

So it is conceivable that, even without the Range module like I have, someone could have very low AFM activity. So again, what would a dealer even do with that info? Like what, are they going to deny a warranty claim because someone lives rural and hardly ever goes into AFM mode? So, by using the Range module, even if they did check for number of AFM occurrences, it really would mean nothing. In other words, even thinking about this longer than a minute or two shows that one might be experiencing an enlarged paranoia gland.

All the info does is give them a leg to stand on in a denial of a warranty claim the burden of proof if on them to prove that your action of modifying xxxx directly caused failure of partxxxx most times sadly people who buy tuners know what they are doing and don't fight it.. A friend blew his power stroke a few years back all he did was chip it they told him he had to pay he paid a lawyer $250 to write a letter to the dealer that did nothing more than explain the Magnuson moss act and they repaired it no problem a lot o the time it's the service writers that don't want the hassle of a big claim with question marks like mods that will initially try to get the customer to pay
