2500 black plastic box underbody

Just left the dealer looked at some 2500 and i noticed quickly some of them behind the passenger front tire there was a good sized black plastic box. It hangs down even with the frame and it wasnt on all of the 2500 just some of them. Any idea what it is? Didnt snap a pic while i was there.

The plastic box you saw is a tank for the DEF (Diesel exhaust fluid) for the Diesels. Its for emissions to help the Diesel burn cleaner and meet the exhaust standards for Diesels.

I still don't understand why GM puts that tank there. Seems like its just asking for something to rip it off, or get stabbed into it. Maybe that's their plan, so you have to have it replaced often.

That's absurd. GM nor any other brand is going to design something like that with ill intent.

Maybe not, but it sure seems that way. I know a lot of cattlemen around here that have had that problem. large plastic tank under the truck with no protection and rough terrain of a cow pasture can be a bad combo. Seems like it would have been better to put it inside the frame rail. At least then it would have some sort of protection.

Yeah to replace it was $1100.00, just did mine this week!!!!! But GM was nice and paid for 1/2 so it only cost $600.00 to fix their dumb idea. I am looking to get a skid plate for mine, I do not off road my truck, I have no idea how or what hit it.
