Without causing too much controversy, which would be better to run on my new truck? On my old one I had success with the PF46. Would it be reasonable to conclude that the ACDelco would be best for the new one? I know to some degree we're talking six in one hand/half dozen in the other. I know Wix makes a quality filter, I'm just wondering if it would be better than the OEM Delco.

For my truck and car I have stuck with the pf48. For our Toyota van I use wix. You can't go wrong any way

I agree with Ryan,I actually use a UPF48R on both my Silverado and Camaro.

Nothing wrong with the PF48 as all I've ever seen are the classic style with metal center tube. A sub $4 price tag at Wally World doesn't hurt either. However I just bought two WIX 57060's this week. Oreilly auto parts had a promotion and I had a couple of $5 coupons that made them $1.59 each including tax. In my opinion either are good filters. I've also run Purolator Pureones and were highly satisfied with them as well. I just try to avoid Fram (unless it is their Ultra filter). The Fram Ultra is actually quite well built in comparison to their other filters.

I use the PF-63 or WIX equivalent 57045 on my 2008 5.3L. Slightly longer filter(about an inch), more filtration media and slightly more oil capacity. A win-win-win if you ask me. Also GM recommends the PF-48 for break in, and a switch to the PF-63 at your first change.

I usually use k&n's oil filter on my truck, no complaints. I have been told to stay away from fram and cheaper store brand stuff but OEM, wix, and k&n work the best.

i'm not sure if this is going off topic by saying i run k&n filters now, it prevents the flow back the best.... given the question at hand, i'd use the pf48

+1. I do know that some of the Traverses and Acadias came with PF48's from the factory, and owner's manuals stated to use the PF63 for subsequent oil changes, but I never heard of anything like that with the GMT-900's.

Dont' forget the Pureolator Gold PL1777 I think. I've been sold on wix since my 08' sierra, but after getting a gold filter, I'm liking the weight difference in the gold. Much heavier and appears to be more solid than the wix. Maybe it's just me but I thing I'm sticking with the Pureolator. Can't go wrong between the two.

If your vehicle is under the factory warranty, I would use the AC Delco filter. For in the case of catastrophic engine failure, if GM can trace it back to the oil filter (your chances of winning the lottery are better), they can deny your claim.

 

I use the Mobil 1 M1-206 extended filter on Sara (2001 Z28) whose factory warranty is long gone.

 

I use the AC Delco PF48 on my 2013 Yukon Denali, and as said above @ Wal-Mart is $3.97 a filter.

From a hassle standpoint you're probably right. However if GM were to be able to pen the blame on a non-oem filter, I would expect a major company like WIX to stand behind their product. I read a thread a few years back where a Saturn owner used a Champion Labs ecore filter. They had a failure and GM refused warranty because they found pieces of the antidrainback valve in oil passages. Champion Labs stepped up and paid for the repair. I'll try to find this thread..... don't remember what board it was on.

    • Late reply, but yes—it works on the SLT trim. Compatibility comes down to the plastic shroud shape behind your mirror, not the trim badge itself. On the SLT with auto-dimming, it uses a plug-and-play Y-harness off the mirror/rain sensor power, so no need to run wires down to the OBD port. If anyone's ever unsure about fitment, just drop a photo of your mirror housing and we can double-check it.   Appreciate the detailed feedback on the install! On the windshield glare—we actually took feedback like yours and developed a dedicated CPL (polarizer) filter to cut down dash reflections on sunny days. If you're still running the cam, shoot me a DM. I'd be happy to send a CPL filter over for you to test out—no charge.

    • After I wrote that reply I went for a ride. 85 F out. So trans started at 85 F and it shifted the same as it did an hour latter at 168 F. I've never actually recorded the to cold to shift point but it is under 32 F before they start hanging on to a lower gear or leaving the converter unlocked. Field trials are still in play.    There is a thing called oxidation onset temperature. This is the heat related oxidation not the O2 exposure kind. For mineral oil that starts at 140 F. So what happens after 140 F? Each 20 F cuts fluid life in half! Does using a Full Synthetic improve that? Yes! By how much? Depends on the base oil type and a few other factors. But enough to notice. Some esters are even higher. There are even synergies between types the will raise it higher than any one component is alone.    Then there is "Hindered" oils. Antioxidant additives. Hindered Polyol Esters can sit at 500 F for years in a turbine.   When a blender brags his oil will 'take 500 F" in service he doesn't specify for how long. Water will dance on a 500 F hot plate for several seconds. @newdude put up a chart showing the relationship between fluid temperature and it's life in an automatic transmission. Here's a version of that chart for Group III based oils. These temperatures are those in the pan as observed as 'normal'. that is you drive as you do for as long as you do under what load you ask of it and whatever that temperature is this graph applies to. Flash temperatures of a few minutes isn't what his means.    Note that fluids held at a constant 240 F have a service life of only 20K miles. 220 F explains the factory exchange limit, eh? My equipment I keep under 180 F and I'm good if the cooler will hold it as low as 140 F. But that's me.
