2 wheel or 4 wheel alignment?

Recommended Posts

Just put new inner and outer tie rods on my 2000 Suburban 1500 (4x4) so today I had the wife make an appointment for an alignment. She calls me and says they asked if we wanted a 2 wheel or 4 wheel alignment done. My initial thought is that there is nothing to adjust on the rear wheels so a "4 wheel alignment" would be a rip off.

Agree or disagree? Thanks in advance.

An alignment is an alignment to me. Not sure why there would be such a price difference if they did 2 or 4.

$40 for the front end alignment, $20 more for the four wheel alignment. I can't even think of anything to "align" on the rear wheels? Sounds fishy to me...

I wasn't sure, I took my truck to Firestone and got the lifetime alignment.

some one correct me if im wrong, but isnt there no way to align the rear wheels of a vehicle with a solid rear axle?

ive had many trucks with high miles and never got "rear wheel alignments"... let me guess, your going to a chain tire store? such as just tires

I've done hundreds of alignments. There is nothing to adjust on the rear unless it has IRS.

I would go with the 4 wheel alignment.

There is away to align the rear wheels if you have an adjustable panhard bar, and the gmt900 doesn't have one.

Here is a point well mentioning, when you get a "2 wheel alignment" you are adjusting the front wheels only.

Even though the fixed axle can not be adjusted, the 4 wheel alignment will tell you if the rear tires are in align with the front.

Why is this important? Have you ever seen a vehicle go down the road "dog boned" ? If your vehicle has ever been in a rearend accident, it is important to do a 4 wheel alignment. The axle can also be out of alignment from the factory, which puts more stress on the driveline.

The 4 wheel alignment will tell you what aspect the rear wheels are to the front wheels, and to me for the extra $20 it is well worth it.

If you are experiencing "rear tire wear" (not from bad shocks) you should have this type of alignment done.
