Cracked Dash 2008 Silverado LTZ CC VMax

We'll add me to the list. I was questioning how much armour all type product people put on, but here I am. I wipe with a microfibres cloth with water, 1 to 2 times a week, which seems excessive, but I don't like to spend much time cleaning, so a minute here or there works for me. Today I went to apply some autoglym to give it a little pop which I like to do a few times a year and voila...the crack!! Just turned a 100 km's and I think aim done with this thing!!

UPDATE: So I get a call from my dealer on my cracked dash he states that they will give me a 20% discount on the needed rrepairs to my dash to make it right don't you think that is kind of cheesy or is it just me your thoughts?

Doesn't seem like the offerings have been consistent at all

20% is unacceptable.. I am receiving 100% paid for.. Contact GM direct.. Corporate offices. This is not a consumer fault.. You should not have to pay anything.. I have posted about putting your complaint on the NHtsa.com and calling GM to assist you in either replacing your dash for free or proving to you the crack does not jeopardize your airbag or your safety. If we can get GM a to recall then this will be solved. Otherwise GM needs to replace them for free as people like yourself call them! That's how I got mine done! The dealers are not cooperating unless GM tells them they will cover the cost 100%! Please please post your scenario on The NHTSA.com site and Change.org site we need everyone on this forum to do it or we will not get this resolved for future dash cracks!

Was he able to do this with a straight face?.............oh, I forgot he's a dealer.

I would pass even if my cost was 20%. I'll bet they make 40% just on parts.

Sheesh. This reminds me of the 80s GM trucks and cars that would suffer dash cracks and fading very badly. Sure leaves a bad feeling when it comes to thinking about getting another truck. maybe have the dash LINE-Xd!!

I thought I was the only one until I researched the cracked dash problem. I had a 09 LTZ 6.2 Silverado bought as a demo and purchased every option they gave me for maintenance. Dumped a ton of cash for services. When I found the Crack (out of warranty of course) they told me a GM rep will contact me. 2 months later I kept bugging and bugging. Long story short GM is brushing us off. After going thru ever layer of customer support including social media and having hope after they all told me they will be looking into it and are sure they can resolve it Only in the end to have them decline to help is so sad for people paying 50k plus for vehicles. What upsets me the most is they always give you a glimmer of hope that they'll actually help you out even on social media. Complete bs! After giving up and reporting the incident to the better business Bureau a rep from the "executive review board" contacted me and offered a measly $200 service credit. Ended up trading the one car I've ever really enjoyed the most because I couldn't stand looking at the Crack. Those offered $200 to fix the whole dash good for you for now because I basically got jack $200 won't pay to even cover that cost for me. File the complaints with the appropriate gov agencies and complain on their Facebook page. Understand one thing, the Crack is not your fault even if you use cleaning products on the dash. There is no amount of magic that can cause everyone's dash to Crack in the exact same places, it screams defect! Sorry for the long rant. God bless.

Ps. Any social media reader please don't respond to my rant. I've had enough hopes that GM would make good on the defect. You guys got me to buy a new demo Denali for now. If that dash cracks then it will be quits for me and GM, never forget about the little man.

Anyone experiencing cracks in dadhboards, ESPECIALLY in upper left corner near the passenger airbag?!

Please post your compaint on the NHTSA.org website!

This is not a consumer at fault problem!

I am about to be interviewed by local media and take these and many more internet complaints dating back to 2006 to a more FORMAL recall request via the NHTSA.org (National Highway Traffic and Safety.org), local media, and better Business Bureau, and anywhere else that will help take action!

Dealerships need to stand behind their products even when the manufacturer doesn't!!!!

Asking any of us to trust that this is safe or ask us to pay for the repairs is wrong especially since this occurs within 12-48 months of new vehicle purchase!

The more complaints the better the chance that GM will have to take action or at worst, your local dealerships will have to cover these repairs even if the problem repeats itself after repairs,

The goal..

1.prove that this is happening to a lot of vehicles not just a few!

2. if GM is unwilling to issue recall for safety, then issue a notice of safety that airbags will not randomly engage as crack compromises the integrity of the structure, and will engage when needed!

3. the problem seems to recur after repair and dealerships should not require consumer to pay for all or any portion of repairs!

Kind Regards,

Darmy

Good advise.

Not sure if anybody here visits SilveradoSierra forum at all but they have a long thread going over there with the dash crack issue. There is also a TSB posted in the thread with information on how to have the issue taken care of.

There is also a well written explination that was given by GM as to why the dash cracks on certain years/models.

A lot of those guys over there have been pretty lucky with being able to have their dash replaced with little to no cost to them. I know there were some that had a good dealer that did the right thing and did a complete dash upgrade with parts that had extra support in the areas prone to cracking. There were also a few who for whatever reason, had to pay up to $200 for the replacement. Don't remember if it were due to being out of warranty, or if it was the labor cost for the removal of the defective dash and instalk of the new. Either way it's much cheaper than paying for the dash and labor, they are not cheap!

I would suggest taking a peek at their thread on that forum for more information on the cracked dash issue. You can view all topics without having to join the forum.

    • That makes sense, and I think you are describing the real product problem. Capturing data is the easy part. If the owner or technician has to manually dig through five minutes of millisecond-level logs, the product has already failed. The device would be at the ECM harness, not at the OBD port, so I agree that data retrieval and event marking need to be thought through carefully. The way I am thinking about the architecture is: The recorder itself should not depend on a phone, app, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cloud connection to capture the event. It should always keep a local rolling buffer and lock the event locally. A button, phone app, or small cabin device would only act as an event marker. If the driver feels a stumble and presses the button 10–30 seconds later, the pre-buffer has to already contain the useful data. For data retrieval, the practical options would be a sealed service USB lead, Wi-Fi download, or a phone/cabin companion device. I would not expect the owner to remove the ECM-side module or work with raw files directly. The cloud or AI side would be for interpretation, not for capturing the event. The truck may have no connection when the issue happens, so the evidence has to be saved locally first. After that, cloud processing could help decode the data, compare it against baselines, and generate a readable report. For the first version, I would keep the automatic triggers conservative and objective: driver event marker bus-off error passive voltage drop / brownout device reset FIFO or queue overflow a normally periodic message disappearing side-to-side communication mismatch, if the topology supports that For “learning normal,” I agree with your point, but I would not want to overclaim it as automatic root-cause diagnosis at first. A realistic first step would be learned baseline comparison for that specific vehicle and operating condition. For example, a value would only be compared against similar conditions: RPM range load / MAP throttle position gear / vehicle speed coolant and oil temperature battery voltage AFM/DFM state, if decoded and validated Then the report could flag things like: this periodic message disappeared compared with its normal timing this value deviated from this vehicle’s normal range under similar conditions the same abnormal pattern repeated after the same type of event the anomaly occurred together with voltage, oil-pressure, misfire, or communication changes But I would still call that “abnormal pattern detected,” not “replace this part,” unless there is enough validated repair data behind it. So the intended product would not be “here is a huge log.” It would need to be an event package: what triggered the capture how much pre/post data was preserved what changed before and after the event whether the device itself reset, overflowed, or saw a bus error selected graphs around the event raw data only as supporting evidence From your perspective, what would make this kind of report useful instead of just another datalog? For example: What are the top 5 parameters or events you would want highlighted first? Would you trust a learned baseline for that specific vehicle, or would you prefer fixed thresholds? How much false-positive flagging would be acceptable before you stopped looking at the reports? What would a one-page report need to show for an independent shop to take it seriously? For misfire, AFM/DFM, oil pressure, or U-code complaints, what would you want the tool to flag automatically?
