First Oil Change

Recommended Posts

I have almost 2800 miles on my new 03 Yukon, and am wondering if I should change the oil at 3000 or wait until 5000?  I always changed my oil every 3000 on my previous vehicles, but I thought I remember hearing that for the first oil change, you should wait until 5000 for GM trucks.  Is that true or did I make that up in my head?

Not sure if I'm going to change to synthetic or not.  Not sure if it is worth the extra $.

If you are going use 3K intervals you will be ok with dino oil.

My suggestion is switch to Mobil 1 and a Mobil 1 filter and go with a 5K interval.

Synthetic oil and a good filter will give your engine better protection.  As far as synthetic oils go check out some of their web sites and do some research.  Some of the most popular synthetics like Royal Purple, Amsoil and Mobil 1 have good web sites.

As for the first change, I would tend to do it a little earlier to rid the oil of metal fragments and other debris from the manufacturing process.  I think I had mine done around 1500 or 2000.

I did my first oil change on my 2003 Sierra at 1200 miles, even then found small particles on the magnet on drain plug so I would recomend to you to go ahead and change it now. I went with Schaeffers 5w-30 synthetic blend and A/C oil filter.I also was planning to go to 3000 miles but from reading other post on the forum about miles for first oil change I went ahead and changed mine because the guy that posted said he found particles on his oil drain plug magnet saying this was common on new engines.

Within the first 3000 miles is okay.

I myself have always done the first at 500 starting 100% synthetic, second at 1500, to third at 3000 and then start a 4000 interval.  Maybe excessive, for me at least non of my cars have ever had a moving part problem.  On average I keep cars to about 130K, one was to 210K.  And I never hesitated to sell them to a friend.

They'll be all kinds of change religions.  Just find one that you're comfortable with and can readily afford.  So for most will just be the manufacturers extreme schedule.  Sadly there is still a great number that ignore it all together.

I may have gone overboard but I changed mine at 1,500 at 3,500 and at 6,000. I also changed the rear axle fluid at 6,000.

Ireally need this truck to last a long, long time so I went the extra mile to make sure it has a good start.

Thanks for the info, everybody.  I guess I should have changed it already.  I'm going to change it right now.
