I was down at the gas station putting fuel in my 86 K20....this old timer that was sitting on his porch across the way comes over and starts talking to my about my truck...asking about the year, motor etc etc...then he looks in the cab and says "oh its got the 4 spd manual....thats a rarity for this year" Being the first I had ever heard someone saying something about the fact that an older truck being manual trans I asked.."really why?"..and he says "Because in the late 80's is when the big automatic transmisssion push came through by car companies trying to show the general public that they are better and more effiecent then the manual trans" I just said oh really and shortly ended the conversation and went on my way....

Has anyone ever heard of this? because I am not buying it.....however I do know there is ALOT of automatic trucks around this year out there too....more then I ever see with the manual trans

Maybe not as rare as he may have had it seem, but I would say pretty limited in make.

I'd say that's wrong because automatics as a whole only really recently passed manuals for efficiency/power delivery. Automatics were and are simply more popular.

In a 3/4 ton on a carbed job from 86...... not uncommon or rare. About every second one I see for sale has an sm465 Muncie in it. I mean it was that or a turbo 400.

I would agree and say not that rare, but find a 86 with 4 speed that does not have an "Unleaded Gas Only" sticker on it!!! My 86 that I bought new did not use unleaded gas, it was the last year that any gasoline engine was sold that did not require unleaded. :jester:

If you want to get trivial 86 was also the last year you could get non catalyst dual exhaust on the 3/4 ton and up trucks.
