Questions on ordering a 2014 Sierra

I am currently in the market for a 2014 Sierra. I tend to keep my vehicles for a long time so I want to make sure I get what I want. That being said, I do know what I want, I just can't find it. I've only seen 1 in the entire country.

I want the following: 2014 Sierra SLT, Crew cab, Standard box, 4wd, Iridium Metallic, SLT Crew value package, 20" Chrome Alluminum wheels, Preferred package (Remote start and sliding rear window), power sunroof, Heated and cooled seats.

I went to my local deal and there was only (1) available in the country. 1200 miles away.

I'm o.k if I have to buy a truck with a few more options not listed, but I won't buy one without all of these options. And if another salesman tries to get me to buy the All-Terrain without cooled seats or the chrome alluminum wheels I'm gonna lose it....

I have 2 questions.

1. How do you settle on the price when ordering a truck? Is there any negotiating at all? Or do you pretty much pay MSRP? I have been told "whatever rebates are available at time of delivery is what you get, but we don't know the price"

2. For those of you that have ordered, what would you have done differently?

Don't settle for anything less then what you absolutely want. There are always other dealerships.

Mike, I ordered my Denali with the 6.2 on September 19th. That was the first day GM started accepting Denali orders. One problem, they had no prices. I ordered it anyway because I knew what I wanted and also knew I didn't have the patience to wait. I have no regrets, I'm glad I ordered it when I did. It is scheduled for build next week. My dealer tells me the Denali and the 6.2 are both on constraint now. I'm a happy camper. Good luck with your decision.

Email all the GMC dealerships in your area a request for quote, be sure to include the package and all the options you want, be very clear that you want an exact match and to give you their best price. Once you get the prices back and reviewed them from all your dealers send another email to the same dealers with all the prices you received and ask for a "best and final offer" they should all email you back a better price, repeat this process until you get the price you want to pay. You won't have to step foot in a dealership until you have made a decision. This process works great for me as I have bought many vehicles this way and have always received great pricing. Good Luck!

You have a good point. When we bought our Odyssey, that's what I did. I got prices on identical vans, and values for my trade (sight unseen at first). Then, one dealer asked what it would take and I told them, beat the lowest price on the van and give me more than the highest value I'd been quoted on trade and he would likely have a sale. Needless to say, they did much better on both counts. I was very pleased and would recommend them to anyone shopping a new Honda or any other pre-owned vehicle they may have in stock.

I am going to have a trade, a 2005 GMC Sierra 2500 HD. I do think I am going to do that, e-mail about 12 dealers within my area (Houston.) and see their best price to build what i'm looking for. I'm sure they can give me a pretty close price on my trade-in once the truck comes available. Then, just see who wants the sale the most. I'll keep everyone posted. I'm definitely not going to settle, when spending $45-50,000 it's going to be exactly what I want, lol. I've waited 8 years, whats a few more months.

Exactly what I did before finding the one and only Silverado in the state with my specifications. I was luckily able to negotiate a deal just as good as all of the offers I had gotten over email.

For reference - my truck had a $46,995 MSRP and I got offers as low as $41,700 to order it. This is BEFORE any rebates/private offers/etc...

Make sure they email you their offer excluding all other offers. That will only confuse matters and make it harder to compare apples to apples

THANK YOU!!! That's a huge help knowing what your special order would have cost. That's a great deal. I do have GM points from credit card and $1,000 private offer. I won't mention those until we agree on a price.

I have used the same tactic on three trucks since 2005. I always end up at the same dealer and close to invoice. When we bought my wife a new Enclave again we were under invoice without shopping them. They also know me by name when I do need service even if it's just an oil change. I am to the point that the service, loaners and treatment is worth more than nickel and dimeing them for $500 or $1,000. I ordered a 6.2 SLT with max tow exactly the way I want without pricing back in September. It is a sold order in my name without deposit. I trust the dealer and know we will be close to invoice whatever it is. They value their reputation and count on return customers. Now I just need GMC to lift constraints.

If a truck is sitting on a dealers lot then you know you can squeeze them quite a bit on the pricing. Without to much back and forth I got 6700 off a 42k truck. My dad also just bought a new 14 and he got almost 8500 off a 53k truck. Both of these were sitting on the lots. Shop around and don't settle on a price because you think it can't be done. Just remember that these trucks are a dime a dozen and there will be plenty out there if you don't get the first one you want.

Yah don't mention any GM card points until you have gotten the dealer to the price you want to pay! Trust me putting a bid out for vehicles will save you money! Has for me every time! The dealers ( I always work with the same ones) just hate me when I tell them I am in the market for a new vehicle and I tell them I am going to bid it.

Sounds like a good plan. I didn't whip out my private offer until I had all of the financing information already drawn up for me. They had to re-do my financing paperwork but I was 100% guaranteed my price at that point.

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
