I am in the market for a pick up, and have been agonizing between the GMC 1500 SLT Double Cab and the Ram 1500 Laramie Quad Cab.

I'm sure some of you went through the same thing. Why did you choose GMC or Chevy over the Ram?

I will admit, one of the big selling points of the Ram is the sound of that engine. Sigh. Shows I'm still a teen-ager at heart, I guess. Other points swaying me toward Ram are: push button start, riding/driving position seems better, air suspension.

I have previously owned exactly one new Dodge Ram and one new Ford King Ranch. Did not take me but a few months of ownership of each to switch back to a Silverado. I realize your looking at a GMC but GMC and Silverado are basicly the same. The Ram and Ford stayed in the shop more than they were out of it. My experience only, others may differ.

There is that. GMC has a very good customer satisfaction rating, I think.

Clearly I'm leaning toward GMC, because I would save about $3k, I think, if I could get the equivalent deal on a GMC that RAM is offering.

well I have found it best for me to buy what I want and like the best. I bought my wife a new 14 Texas Edition Silverado 4x4 this past August and after taking a long road trip in it, we like it so much that I bought me a new 14 Silverado Z 71 4x4. I paid more for both than I would have paid for a 13 Silverado but like I said we wanted a 14 and did not even consider a Ford or Dodge due to previous expiereces with them as stated in my earlier post. Both of our 14's have been problem free and are a pleasure to drive.

Ha. Well, Mr Hunglo, that certainly does factor into the equation.

But look, ya'll. I know you all went through the mental process of deciding to get a Silverado or Sierra. Since I don't know a lot about trucks, I'm just hoping to take advantage of your ideas/reasons.

You drive a Ram with that stupid gear selector knob they use on the 8-speeds? That there would be a big deterrent to me, fixing something that was never broken.

Well here it goes, a bought a Chevy primarily because I don't like the GMC (ford super duty) front end. there I said it!

Some don't see the similarity but I sure do!

Sound-Fixed with new muffler and made to sound even better than a dodge

Pushbutton start-big whoop...I can start my truck from my phone with the OnStar app from anywhere....I don't have a problem actually using a key for what it's designed for

Driving position-haven't test drove a new dodge, can't comment on it

Air suspension-will admit, having an air bag rear suspension to help level the truck between loaded/trailer/empty would be nice

I personally liked the GMC over the bowtie, but my insurance was enough more a year for the GMC so that I went with the chevy

Loganbent,

Did your insurance agent said why there was a difference in insurance with the Chevy versus GMC?

My insurance dropped $180 a year from my 2011 to 2014 GMC.

Thanks.

They said it was just their statistics showed that GMC's were more expensive to ensure than Chevy, didn't ask why...fire, theft, accident repair, incident rate etc, the minor differences between that I preferred the GMC's over the Chevy weren't worth it for me.

There is a decent video at car & driver with all 3 trucks at the bottom of the page linked.

Always thought the Ram seats would be more comfortable as they are taller & since I drive a semi, high back seats are a good thing.

But theirs seemed to push forward at the top due to the head rest & never could get it out of the way test driving.

Too note, I bought a 2013 GMC back in April before the 2014 GM trucks were out.

Didn't drove the RAM just seated in the cab.

Pros: I liked the fact that the RAM seats higher on the road than the GMC, it has more "mean" look to it, 8" or 10" (not sure but it's big) NAV display, heated back seats, more knees room in the back seats, keyless engine start and storage above wheel wells (I'm a contractor - very useful to me)

Cons: looks just like previous year model, gas millage, resale value and advise from friend who knows about trucks better than me.

bottom line I got much better deal on the GMC Sierra with ALL the features I wanted and the color I wanted.

I was just at the Ram dealership testing out their trucks and drove a limited. My thoughts are that it's on par with the Sierra, if not better in some respects.

I love the way the ram drives, handles, and sounds. The interior finish and display are incredible!

I will say this...I still like the way the Sierra looks over the Ram, the only thing that's making ME personally question the Sierra is the flood of posts from people who seem to have rattling issues, warped dashes, etc...

NOW...I understand that it's a 1st year model and these things DO happen, but from my research and checking out Ram forums, they don't seem to experience these types of things.

Also, one thing to note...check out some Ram dealer web sites, they're slashing 7 to 10k off of the MSRP on those trucks + incentives & rebates - pretty sweet deals if you ask me.

And yes...I still got my Denali on order and plan to get it :-).

    • So.  Get this.  On the Chevy regular cab, you can get the factory remote start at the dealer from the accessories catalog.  BUT.  GMC, you can't.   Now...get this...GMC 2 door, you CAN get the power seat.     Go.  Figure.   Anywho.  are you trying to order?  Or locate?  Ordering for 2 door 1/2 tons has been stopped as of April or May?  So you won't be able to order.  You'll have to shop on the ground units or in transit units.     Ordering was stopped because the new trucks are coming.
    • Thank you.  I really appreciate the well wishes.  I'm an engineer in the telecom industry, I know hardly anything about marketing.  Over the years I did some videos for nonprofits and web sites for small businesses and the seed was planted.  Agree with over-buying, I started shooting on an iPhone before I got my first DSLR and tripod.   I'm looking at trucks with potentially 150,000+ miles to keep the cost of entry low while focusing on the client experience and equipment.  Good wireless mics for interviews, the right lenses & lighting to look professional.  But I don't want to be late or break down, the stress of emptying a trailer & securing a rental truck right before a gig would negate any savings from buying a junker.  So anything that leaks water, has extensive rust, or generally unreliable I'd like to avoid.   Does GM/Chevy overbuild these trucks for upfitting?  I talked to a local upfitter, they sometimes tie lights & other 12V into existing circuits, which I always thought was bad.  Which is why I enjoyed the AUX upfit switches on previous trucks (odd they mostly come with off-road or work truck packages).
    • i guess it might be depending on the type of driving. my 2.7 has 120k miles, changed the plugs at 70k and it runs as good as new. i have not used any injector cleaner
    • GM's are stainless and have a fairly robust powder coating, although, still not worth $850 in my opinion. They will hold up a lot better than their cheaper steel aftermarket counterparts.   What I like about the GM step bars is dealers will often equip their dealer stock with them. Lots of margin. Which means a lot of people end up buying them because they're already on the truck, even if they don't like them. So it's pretty easy to find brand new takeoffs with hardware on Marketplace and Craigslist for about $250.   That's what I did for my crew cab. I wanted ZR2 rock rails for the look, but with the ability to bolt up GM's assist step package. From GM it's about a $2500 accessory all in. The old folks in my life can't get in the truck without steps. I found the whole package on marketplace for $180.
    • I am really glad I found this post and this site... We have a 2022 1500 refresh LTZ that has these problems: - forward collision avoidance warning light - lane keep assist unavailable - adaptive cruise control unavailable   The truck was bought as a new leftover in 2023, so it was still under the 3/36 B to B when it went in for these problems earlier this year. It has been at the dealer on and off now for about 110 days now. These are some of the things they have done that I can read on the service tickets. - replace/add ground straps (4) - check all battery cables and vlts - replace serial data gateway module - replace front view camera - numerous reprogramming - a few calibrations (apparently ending with 'learned') Last week when I had it back the truck had those 3 warnings every time we used it except for 3 times. On three separate occasions the truck started and ran perfectly with no (zero) warning messages or warning lights lit - everything worked perfectly. Over that same time period the truck did not work on every other 'key' cycle which I would estimate at 60+ cycles. On those estimated 57 cycles it had the same 3 problems each and every time.   It is back at the dealer now - can anyone help at all with what the true problem might be?  Or possibly what can be ruled out leaving a lower number of possibilities? Thank you very much for any help you may be able to supply....
