What do you think of Ram 1500's?

So while I'm waiting for my '14 Denali to show up, I'm looking at the Ram trucks.

 

What do you guys think of them? pros, cons, etc...I never owned one but would love to hear your thoughts on it...

I was going to drive the new Ram before being my new Sierra, but after driving the Sierra, I didn't bother with driving the Ram. However, they're nice trucks and definitely worth a look if you're in the market and aren't stricken with an acute case of fanboyism.

Good looking trucks, nice interior. The six speed they still use on some models isn't very good IMO and while the eight speed worked nice in a 300 I drove a year ago or so, the stupid knob selector seems like a lousy way to select gears. Also not sure of build quality- when I was cross-shopping all three I found several examples of guys who had ordered a Ram and it arrived with the wrong axle gears or radio unit.

If you tow on the heavier side of a 1500 the Rams have a lower payload capacity from what I have read, especially the upper trim models.

 

Buddy has a '13 2500 Laramie and it is a very nice truck from what I have noticed the few times I have been in it as far as the quality goes. Though I haven't looked with a fine tooth comb though!

Coming from a ram dealership, I can honestly say I had preconcieved notions of it being a typical chrysler product. The 2008 and back trucks are typical chrysler (not all that great) but the 09 and up trucks are solid! Not too many warranty claims at all, anything they came in for was the occasional issue or something stupid (trim piece, gas cap left loose, occasional rattle from somewhere in the vehicle BUT ITS NOT THE CHANGE, TOOLBOX, TOOLS, 50 MILLION KEYS ON THE KEY RING, GLOVE BOX INEXPLICABLY FULL OF MARBLES) If you were to buy one, it would be a solid purchase. They do feel as huge as they look though, which sucks when parking. that's what I like most about GM trucks they somehow drive smaller then they look. My .02

I wouldn't buy one!! I love the '14 Silverado's! I had a chance to test drive a couple & loved them!

my dad has owned two 09+ rams. Pros, lots of interior space, con- he had a crew cab and the bed was tiny. I personally am not a fan of the overall layout of the ramsinterior, but that is personal preference. He did mention that my 07 Gmt900 is more sure footed in the snow though.

Buddy has a 2010 Crew Cab ram 1500 4x4 and it is a solid vehicle for sure. He only has 21,xxx on it but so far it has not given him one issue at all. Has some recall out on it right now for something minor, but other than that he has been super happy with it.

But I'll play. Just like the GM's, too much chrome on the front end. They ride good. But with their rearend your payload/tongue capacity is pretty low. I don't like the knob shifter. They look kinda funny to me. But I don't think they're "bad".

I would agree with you on the stories, but I think the new models are rock solid and better than GMCs. Don't get me wrong. I love the Sierra trucks, but after looking at and test driving a Ram Limited for 2 days...I think it's solid. I wouldn't buy a dated looking ford F150 no matter what tho.

Go press anywhere on that sheet metal & you will question that rock solid statement. All body panels(from all mfg's) are getting thinner I know, but there are posts on a Ram forum about closing the hood & leaving finger print dimples. Or a guy changing a tire road side & leaned against the bedside denting it. The center of the doors are interestingly thin as well.

 

Ram has its strong points & they do in fact push Ford & GM to up their game & more often. Which is a good thing. That & Fiat smacked GM by taking a diesel that GM owned roughly 50% of the company. Not thinking the multi truck strategy is what GM needed to do & like everyone else, would love to see them put the 4.5 liter Dmax in the K2's. GM will watch Ram win or lose & probably be too slow to react. Again, Ram has their strong points, but rock solid is generally not one of them. Of the big three, they are still using 5 bolt lugs vs 6, low payload in trade for coil spring ride & now worst crash test rating among the domestics.
