Continue with OnStar after trial period

I have a dumb cell phone (calls only - prepaid flip phone) and have enjoyed the hands free calling on OnStar plus having my wife call me at my 'truck number'. I have used the 'call for directions' and seeing the directions displayed on the trucks screen (just did one test to see how it worked - pretty good IMO). On trips I use Garmin using the beanbag on the dash.

After the 6 month dealer provided free service period, has anyone been able to call OnStar and negotiate a lesser fee for another yearly contract? If so, what method did you use - so that I might try the same method.

And the fact is I don't make very many phone calls, nor do I receive many - but having the ability is a good safety feature I think. I have 2 stored numbers on my cell phone but have already stored 6 numbers on OnStar :-)

Thanks

I went to the site online and got it for a year for the Safe and Sound for $14/month. You might be able to do even better if you call.

Just re-upped at $14.95 a month, cheaper if I would have paid for a year. I wanted the remote link app for my phone. Keep in mind that the hands free callng minutes aren't part of the monthly fee. And the cost per minute ain't cheap.

I think I read someplace if you use the phone app once during your trial period it's good for 5 years, even after your subscription expires. I like the app, but not sure is use the service otherwise.

That's true. I got the app and have used it a couple of times, mostly for showing-off convenience (lol), but I'd probably use it more often if I lived where it was cold and I wanted to start my truck from a distance. But I'm not going to renew OnStar when my time is up. I bought 300 minutes when I signed up for a low price, and have only used 3 of them since Dec 1st, and I know they're extremely expensive once the intro period is over.

I believe this is only true for the remote start feature (and doors/horn). The other features of the RemoteLink app requie an OnStar subscription (oil life, fuel level, etc.)

and I'm guessing that 99% of us only care about the free part = remote start feature (and doors/horn)
