Question about 1st Oil Change at 1k Miles...Opinion?

Hey guys. I've had my 2014 Sierra truck one week today. After driving to the mountains this past weekend on a ski trip, I have almost 600 miles on it already. I've read other threads on this forum about doing an initial oil and filter change at 1k miles to remove metal shavings and ensure a long lasting engine. I'm aware GMC pays for 2 years worth of service on the vehicle. This would be a service I would pay for myself costing about $60 for 8.5 quarts of 0W-20 oil and an oil filter. I would do the service myself and I don't mind that. My questions is, how many of you guys did this initial 1k oil/filter change or are planning to do it when you hit 1k miles? I do plan on keeping this truck for 10 years or longer. Will this initial oil change reap me a benefit I was see through a more durable, longer lasting truck 10 years down the road or am I wasting my time?

Also, if I do this oil change, was planning on using 8.5 quarts of 0W-20 Mobile 1 or Castrol full synthetic motor oil. Does anyone recommend anything different?

Opinions about the 1K oil change?

Wait till 3k miles. Doing it at 1k is a waste of oil in my opinion. Also, why use synthetic oil in this engine? Do you have the 5.3 liter?

Seems like a waste of $60 to me. I can think of a better way to waste $60.. one dollar at a time. :o)

Yes, I have the 5.3 L. I assumed synthetic 0W-20 is what's in it now. Most vehicles that recommend oil changes 7.5K-15k intervals usually run synthetic or at least a synthetic blend. Does the 5.3L just have conventional motor oil?

Yeah, the 3K seems more sensible to me as well. The thread I read the other day on here, most guys were saying they recommended doing it at 1K.

As for the $60. It's money well spent if it increases the life of the truck. I just want to make sure there is truly a benefit to this service. Otherwise, yes, I agree, it's a waste of money.

This can be a hot topic, lots of opinions. I used to be an Amsoil dealer, did a lot of oil testing never saw the benefit of that. But if it gives you peace what the heck do it. We even did the 25000 mile deal changing the filter at 12000 miles oil test was good, did it in the 80s. Rule of thumb for me now is 5000 hard driving 7500 normal. Engines today run really clean not much contamination. But I like synthetics and best filter you can buy.

Your fine until you get to 7,500 miles or 20% on the meter. I know everyone will bark at this... but these motors...and for sure the oil.. is much better than your uncles 74 Oldsmobile.

Some people get so anal about frequent oil changes that it is really funny. Someone on Kawasaki Concours motorcycle forum changed the engine oil and filter at first 300, 500, and 1,000 miles. And then at 2k miles. I think it was a waste of money and time, but if it made him feel better (and his Kawasaki dealer) then all is good.

Try this, and I'm serious.............drain your oil into a CLEAN pan and take a look at it, if your comfortable with the appearance of metal shavings and the color of milk chocolate like mine was, then by all means put it back in your motor and let her rip........I'll bet you don't. BTW, use whatever name brand brand oil your comfortable with.

I did my first oil change on my 2013 at 1190 miles..... along with the diffs, transfer, and transmission. The way the transfer case fluid looked, concerned me. Like something that got pumped from my septic tank, and the magnetic drain plug had so many metal filings on it that it resembled a cat the had its tail stuck in a light socket. The rear diff was 1.5 pints low from the factory. Dealer never checked.

As for anything later, I don't mind following the OLM. There is hardly a high quality motor oil that will not provide good service for the interval of the oil life monitor. But if one chooses to use a shorter interval, then go for it. It is not a "waste" if the person doing it feels good about doing it. Used oil is recycled, and it is their money to do with what they choose.

Most cased lubricant levels are not going to be checked by a dealership when receiving a vehicle from the factory.

As to your diff being low, it does not surprise me and I suspect most are low. Many vehicle manufacturers went to a policy of putting in just the bare minimum lubricant and fluid levels as a cost savings measure. These minimums will be unpublished specs from internal engineering direction and will differ between "service" spec once in use and serviced after being sold.
