In the 90’s you could push the parking brake just a tiny bit, the truck figured you were parked and turned them off. Not sure what that did on the dash board. If that still works you could deal with the switch.

when I turn the headlights from automatic to off, does that disable the DRL,s?

Forget where I saw it, but, SUPPOSEDLY, you can do the same thing with these trucks.  Believe the wording said that you had to push the pedal down two clicks.  My Ridgeline was one to two, beyond that, the brakes would "rub."

I modified the switch to remove the spring allowing the dial to be turned all the way to the left.

I have a 2014 GMC Sierra WT that is Canadian.  Will this mod work for my truck or just the silverados?  Sorry I’m new here

It will work if you dont have the LED headlights. I know there have been wiring diagrams posted but still use a test light to find out which wire is hot with the low beam on and again for the amber light just to be sure you have the correct wires. Then swap their positions in the truck side of the connector.

I'm sorry, but this whole argument about the safety of DRL's is stupid. If you need headlights to see in the daytime, or if you need someone else to have headlights so you can see them in the daytime, then you don't need to drive. That being said, my DRL's are off

Why? They're for safety. Not sure if you've ever seen the result of a head on collision... I bet you would change your tune if you did.

If you can't see a car in the daylight, you shouldn't be driving!!!!!

Correct... its very simple, just need some very fine point tools to get the pins out of the connector. Start by removing the 2 grey peices. there is one on the front and back of connector.

Check right next to H. Here is the list of both plugs for each headlight, with wire colors.

On a bright and sunny day, it looks dumb to have your low beams on, also, the bulbs will burn out a lot faster. However, LED's or Ambers (orange parking lights) can add a nice touch in the daylight.

Say I wanted the ambers for DRLs insted of the low beams, could I just cross the power wire from each? So the ambers come on instead (when I shift out of park). so then one click right on the light knob would actually turn on the low beams (i dont care because i have no use for this setting). and then obviously 2 clicks right would be low beams and ambers together, as usual.. and the auto night lights would work the same and not be affected.

I just switched the locations of low beam supply (pin B) with the park lamp supply (pin E) in the connector. No cutting or splicing wires. No relays. No modification. Can easily go back to stock. Now only the orange parking lights come on during the day when in gear, and it looks sweet. The low beams will come on when I turn the light switch, or when the auto nightlights are tiggered by darkness. This is only confirmed for Silverado because I think the Sierra uses the LEDs for DRL not low beams.

Just unplug the right or left harness and use a test light to see what pin is hot when low beam is on. and then what pin is hot with parking lamp on. diagrams were posted a few pages back so you can see which pins are which (ABCDEFGH) D,G and H are blanks. if you dont have a test light, im pretty confident that B is low beam and E is parking lamp. If you cant find the diagrams... when looking straight in the connector there is an upper and lower row or pins, 4 slots per row. upper right corner is A moving left to D. lower right corner is E moving left to H

So you're just swapping B with E in the plug and vice versa, E to B? I must try :) Thanks!

Ok, after digging through this thread, I quoted all the relative information. Has anyone tried this on a 2016 Silverado 2500HD with success? I am wanting to run either LED's or HID's but the DRL function obviously kills this idea. I also despise the DRL feature and would love to have it disabled. Would you be able to just un-pin the DRL supply voltage wire completely out of the plug and not have to worry about swapping it?

If you skip to 3:17, you will see the plug this is referring to:

For anyone that is curious is my above post works, it does 100%. This now allows my HID's to run 100% perfect with no issues with the 9v DRL. It also deleted the standard headlight DRL and now my park lights are my DRL. I would suggest this anyone that is either wanting to get rid of the DRL headlights or run HID/LED's without have to buy/use the relay kit. Now its plug and play.

if you drive much or slightly fatigued the DRL makes it easier to notice the vehicle and the system also turns the headlights on in dim situations where the lazy, tough guy, does not.....again yes for safety. It amazes me how many people have newer vehicle driving down road with no lights on when almost dark....just not sure what the point is. But hope somebody who does these mods to disable safety and gets in accident, with damages....looses a mega lawsuit

Update. My LED DRL's have worked as designed all week, I am now checking them in glass when I pull into work, stores etc. It appears now that I am partly to blame as I mistakenly thought the green light should be on. This was probably due to me coming out of the garage in the am when the auto lights are on, and or going to and from work at twilight. I now suspect that the battery disconnect did resolve it but I was hung up on the dash light. The auto function, fog parking lights, etc. all work fine. I will now watch in glass windows for the DRL's but I do not expect an issue.

I now will move on to adding the HID kit. I think I will disconnect the battery from now on prior to any electrical work as a precaution. I do not think there is any harm with the electrical mods if done correctly, it is just that the processor apparently can sense load/resistance and a script or process can hang.

I hope you just solved my problem with drl lights.they work with my park and headlights, but not in daylight.just bought the truck so i will disconnect battery and try that. Thanks Guys

Why is removing the drls such a big deal? Is it legal to bypass a safety feature?

Ryan

The DRL’s these guys want to remove are the low beams on Canadian Silverado’s. The low beams on these Canadian trucks are on all day every day when in gear because it’s the law in Canada to always have daytime running lights on. I have one and it’s annoying as ****. I bought some new projector headlights with LED halo lights that act as DRL’s (wired into marker lamps) but they look like ****** when you also have the low beams on. I would love to have the ability to turn the knob to the left while driving and turn off the low beams, but that’s only possible with Silverado’s made for the states. I’ve been scrolling every thread about this to see if anyone has an answer and have yet to find it. Hopefully someone that knows the answer will read this and tag me in the thread that leads to the solution!!!!

Do not know the answer, but what lights are on when you just use the park lights?

This is what my truck looks like when I just use them:

This issue is for the 14’s and 15’s that were built in/for Canada. They don’t have the nice LED strips for DRL’s. It’s the low beam bulbs instead. And with Canadian trucks, you can’t turn them off unless you’re in park, no matter what! It sucks!!

    • I was in Utah this week attempting a bow hunt in the Wasatch mountains with friends.  On the evening of the first hunt, making my way across a ridge to a friends camp, the upper control arm on the driver's side separated, the CV axle got trashed, and the wheel was dang near at a 45 degree angle to the ground.  I was able to get it towed off the mountain and into town about 3:00 am, and spent the remainder of the night in an O'Reilly's parking lot.  Luckily, there was a Chevrolet dealership not to far away so I was able to get to the dealership and pick up a new CV and UCA.  It would have been a few days before they could have gotten to the truck and I brought tools with me on hunt since it was a two day drive to get there, so I did the repairs myself in the O'Reilly's parking lot.      What's interesting is that the UCA ball joint didn't break, it just popped out of the bottom of the UCA.  There was VERY LITTLE evidence of grease on the ball joint or in the socket, and you could see where the ball joint had warbled out part of the socket over time.  I guess that's what happens over 186K miles of use :)   Big Kudos to O'Reilly's for letting me work on the truck in their parking lot.  However, they made a $150+ off of me from the purchase of various tools, so I guess it was in their best interest anyways :)   Getting towed off the mountain.   UCA Ball Joint Socket   Trashed CV   Suspension disconnected and UCA and CV Removed   New UCA and CV installed with the suspension buttoned up.
    • My family still laughs at me when they see me drive up in the minivan. Same with less than a V-8 truck. It helps that I have choices. I don’t think I could only have a minivan as the one and only vehicle as much as I like it. And I wouldn’t pass up a good buy on an older V-8 reg cab GM truck. Could you live Raven as the only ride?
    • Oil and filter threads are always a good time.  Especially when the BITOG discussion forums are cited as a definitive, technical source.    Countless single-data-point examples of why something is the best ever, or will destroy your engine... "they changed the shade of blue on the filter can, use at your own risk!"... "I've heard they changed the design to only have 64 pleats, total junk!"... "They're hidin' the NOACK data from us!  I wouldn't use that stuff in a cement kiln!".... "There was a guy who cut open Filter X (with a sawzall) and the anti-drainback valve was orange!  It used to be black!  Chinese junk!"   Good stuff.
    • I finally bit the bullet and installed a set of Bilstein 5100's on my 2024 Silverado 2500HD. My truck had about 75,000 miles and I've always felt the factory shocks were less than forgiving. So Bilstein 5100's are the most common go-to replacements. I personally have installed them on many trucks....2002 Silverado 1500, 2014 Silverado 1500, 2017 Chevy Colorado, 2019 GMC Canyon, 2022 Silverado 1500...now my 2024 Silverado 2500. I will eventually put them on my 2021 GMC Yukon as well. Great all around shocks.    Below is my video tutorial installing them on my 2500. As a bonus, for recently hitting 20,000 subscribers on my YouTube channel, I teamed up with Nick Scovel Jr at Scovel Motorsports to create a giveaway. Details are in the video description.
